News from the Nurse
Welcome to the Atkinson School Nurse website!

Dear Parents,

Over the next several weeks I will be checking all student’s vision and hearing.  If your child wears glasses please be sure they have them and wear them at school.  Students will be tested with their glasses on.

Parents of those students that require follow-up screening with their physicians will be notified by mail.  Please have your child evaluated promptly as problems with vision or hearing certainly impact learning.  If you do not receive a referral notice in the mail it means that your son or daughter passed the required screening.

I have also mailed out several Health Record Audits for those student’s that have incomplete health records, including immunizations and physical examinations.  If you have received any correspondence from me, please forward the required information to me promptly.

As always, call me with any questions or concerns. Please visit the Nursing Services website for district-wide school health information and updates.

Dental Program

Last week Grade two had a special visit from staff from Dr. Schrader's Dental Office.  They demonstrated brushing and flossing and talked about good dental health and hygiene.  Each student was given a new toothbrush and toothpaste.  I hope your child shared what they learned with you.  Thank You to the office for coming and sharing with our Second Grade All Stars!

5210 and Pedometer Program

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As part of the health program at the Atkinson School, the Health and Physical Education Departments are going to again sponsor the 5-2-1-0 Program for students in kindergarten and grades 1, 2 & 3.   The purpose of the 5-2-1-0 Program is to bring awareness to the daily guidelines for nutrition and physical activity. Its message is simple and clear and represents some of the most important steps families can take to foster healthy habits resulting in healthy life styles.

The 5-2-1-0 program outlines nutritional and physical activities that students participate in to encourage them to develop positive eating habits and engage in physical activities that promote wellness. Each of the numbers in the 5-2-1-0 represents a wellness goal that students will be working to achieve.

5          Fruits and vegetables.  Eat at least 5 servings a day. “Try Something New”.  Limit fruit juice.

2          Cut screen time to 2 hours or less a day.

1          Participate in at least one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

0          Restrict soda and sugar-sweetened sports and fruit drinks.  Instead, drink water and 3-4 servings/day of fat-free/skim or 1% milk.

The 5-2-1-0  Program will take place in April

During the first week of April students will use personal goal trackers to document the number of servings of fruits and vegetables they eat each day and will restrict soda and sugar sweetened drinks.  They will try and drink more water and milk instead.

During the second week of April students will work to reduce their screen time to two hours or less and will participate in at least one hour of vigorous activity every day.

Students who are successful at reaching their goal each week and return their Goal Trackers to Mrs. Rodden, the physical education teacher, will be given a chain and tokens.  Each week students will be instructed in healthy tips to reinforce the reasons why these behaviors are so important.

How can you help? Please encourage your child/children to participate in the 5-2-1-0 Program.  Our having parental support, will help make this program a success.

Our goal at Atkinson is simple. Through 5-2-1-0 we hope to foster student aspirations to lead a healthy lifestyle, not only while they are at school, but for the rest of their lives. With your help and support they can achieve this goal.

Thank You.

Mrs. Munro and Mrs. Rodden

Dear Grade Five Parents

The week of Monday, April 22 all grade five students will compete in the NCIS (North Andover Competes in Steps) initiative.  Grade five Atkinson students will compete with each other.  Total distance will be calculated.  Our goal is to continue to increase their physical activity and to learn the benefits of walking and a healthy lifestyle.  The competition is for one week.

Each student will be LOANED a pedometer.  Steps will be calculated to miles and each class’s progress will be tracked. I will use the average of the total steps in each class to determine the miles walked.

All pedometers must be returned at the end of the program. The class that travels the most miles will receive NCIS wristbands.   Please emphasize with your student the importance of being responsible for their pedometers as they are costly to replace.

I hope Atkinson All Star Fifth Graders are up to the challenge.  Good Luck!
