The Atkinson Elementary School is dedicated to the memory Frederick C. Atkinson, MD, a local doctor who served on the school committee for 29 years from 1933-1962. The school was opened in 1964 as a junior high school under the direction of Superintendent Douglas Chandler.

The Atkinson facility originally housed grades 7 and 8 with Daniel J. McCarthy as principal (1964-1972). Atkinson became a K-5 elementary school in 1972. The kindergarten classes were moved to Bradstreet Childhood Center a few years after this change happened. The addition of full-day kindergarten classes in September 2003 restored Atkinson to a K-5 school.  Currently, the school houses 375 students and approximately 50 staff.
