Children participate in physical activities which help them learn to manage and control their bodies in a variety of situations. These movement experiences include large muscle activities such as running, skipping, climbing, rolling, throwing, catching, and kicking. Opportunities are provided for learning and practicing social skills and intellectual skills in a physically active setting and in a manner appropriate to the child’s developmental level with special emphasis on:

  • Spatial awareness locomotor skills 
  • Social skills such as sharing and interaction with others exposure to games at age-appropriate levels 
  • Importance of physical activity for life-long health 
  • Proper use of playground equipment. 


Civic and character education is vitally important to the development of well-rounded students. Our Building Respectful Community (BRC) initiative highlights the values associated with RAISE through which North Andover students will demonstrate respect. They will think about others before speaking or taking any action. They will appreciate the contributions of others, while showing respect for themselves, other people, personal and/or community property, and the environment.

  • North Andover students will demonstrate achievement. They will exercise their best effort and judgment in all activities in which they participate and will set goals that promote positive academic, social, and personal development.

Students will explore the big ideas of life, physical and earth science through an inquiry-based, hands-on approach. In studying the following, students will: 1) ask questions, 2) make predictions, 3) record observations, 4) use materials, and 5) engage in discussions using learned vocabulary:

Earth Science

  • Describe weather changes from day to day and over the seasons 
  • Identify how people and animals adapt to seasons 

Life Science

  • Identify characteristics of living things and their environments 

Physical Science

  • Identify objects and materials as solids, liquids, or gas and the characteristics of each state of matter 


Operations and Algebraic Thinking

  • Represent and solve word problems involving addition and subtraction within 20 using appropriate strategies, drawings, manipulatives, and equations 

Number and Operations in Base Ten

  • Understand and use place value of tens and ones to compare, add, and subtract numbers through 99 without regrouping 

Measurement and Data

  • Express the length of an object using nonstandard units and order three objects by length 
  • Tell and write time to the hour and half-hour using analog and digital clocks Identify the value of all U.S. coins, know their comparative values, find equivalent 
  • values, and use the value of coins in the solution of problems 
  • Organize, represent, and interpret data 


  • Reason with shapes and their attributes 


The Grade 1 curriculum strengthens children’s identity as American citizens. The following are the targeted areas for Grade 1 Social Studies instruction:

  • Identify famous Americans, national symbols and national holidays, and understand their significance 
  • Develop an awareness of self and community 
  • Understand location using cardinal directions 


By the end of Grade 1 students will be able to:

  • Realize the following: pitch vs. volume, high vs. low, fast vs. slow 
  • Echo easy rhythmic/tonal patterns 
  • Play simple rhythmic instruments 
  • Sing a repertoire of simple folk songs 
  • Move appropriately to different types of music 


By the end of Grade 1 students will be able to:

  • Experiment with paint and color mixing 
  • Use a variety of materials to create a collage 
  • Construct a 3-D form 
  • Identify texture, shape, color, line, pattern, form and space 
  • Recognize and create texture
