Children participate in physical activities which help them learn to manage and control their bodies in a variety of situations. These movement experiences include large muscle activities such as running, skipping, climbing, rolling, throwing, catching, and kicking. Opportunities are provided for learning and practicing social and intellectual skills in a physically active setting and in a manner appropriate to the child’s developmental level with special emphasis on:
  • spatial awareness
  • loco-motor skills
  • social skills such as sharing and interaction with others
  • exposure to games at age-appropriate levels
  • importance of physical activity for life-long health
  • proper use of playground equipment.


Civic and character education is vitally important to the development of well-rounded students. Our Building Respectful Community (BRC) initiative highlights the values associated with RAISE through which North Andover students will demonstrate respect. They will think about others before speaking or taking any action. They will appreciate the contributions of others, while showing respect for themselves, other people, personal and/or community property, and the environment.

  • North Andover students will demonstrate achievement. They will exercise their best effort and judgment in all activities in which they participate and will set goals that promote positive academic, social, and personal development.

Students will explore the big ideas of life, physical and earth science through an inquiry-based, hands-on approach. In studying the following, students will: 1) ask questions, 2) make predictions, 3) record observations, 4) use materials, and 5)engage in discussions using learned vocabulary:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking
  • Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction
  • Add and subtract within 20 with automaticity
  • Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication
Number and Operations in Base Ten
  • Understand place value
  • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract
  • 3-digit numbers and regroup when necessary
Measurement and Data
  • Measure and estimate lengths in standard units
  • Relate addition and subtraction to length
  • Work with money and solve word problems using dollar bills and all coin values
  • Tell and write times to the nearest five minutes on an analog and digital clock
  • Represent and interpret data
  • Reason with shapes and their attributes
  • Partition shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths

The chief purpose of the Grade 2 social studies curriculum is to help students understand that American citizenship embraces all kinds of people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and national origin. Students will:
  • Use and interpret maps and globes
  • Study customs and traditions of their ancestors
  • Respond to biographies of people of great distinction
  • Understand fundamental economic concepts of community producers and consumers

By the end of Grade 2 students will be able to:
  • Identify and perform simple, rhythmic notation
  • Recognize and label simple song forms
  • Perform two-part songs
  • Accompany selves and others on rhythmic instruments
  • Demonstrate critical listening skills
  • Begin to develop expressive performance skills

By the end of Grade 2 students will be able to:
  • Draw from memory, observation, and imagination
  • Recognize mixed-media projects
  • Identify certain artists throughout history
  • Construct a 3-D form
  • Detect space and depth
  • Begin to make aesthetic decisions
