Body management skills are refined as children mature. Participation in activities in the areas of games, sports, and physical fitness, provides opportunities for students to practice a variety of physical skills. Guided instruction allows children to improve skills in a supportive environment. Acceptable social behavior is encouraged through group participation and building upon previous grades and with special emphasis on:

  • Development of skills through the use of a variety of sports 
  • Team-building through the use of cooperative games
  • Introduction of fitness activities to promote a healthy active lifestyle
Parents can help by ensuring that their child is dressed appropriately for Physical Education such as with laced sneakers and clothing that is comfortable for physical activity.


Civic and character education is vitally important to the development of well-rounded students. Our Building Respectful Community (BRC) initiative highlights the values associated with RAISE through which North Andover students will demonstrate respect. They will think about others before speaking or taking any action. They will appreciate the contributions of others, while showing respect for themselves, other people, personal and/or community property, and the environment.

  • North Andover students will demonstrate achievement. They will exercise their best effort and judgment in all activities in which they participate and will set goals that promote positive academic, social, and personal development.
  • North Andover students will demonstrate inclusion. They have a responsibility to break down barriers by inviting new people into teams, circles of friends, and experiences as they work to be a unified, collaborative community.

Students will explore the big ideas of life, physical, and earth science through an inquiry-based, hands-on approach. In studying the following, students will: 1) ask questions, 2) make predictions, 3) record observations, 4) use materials, and 5) engage in discussions using learned vocabulary.

  • Life Science – Plants

  • Earth Science – Earth, moon, and sun

Math is integrated throughout the school day. Our curriculum emphasizes problem solving and the practice of basic skills. The following are the targeted standards for Grade 3 math instruction:

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

  • Multiply and divide within 100 with automaticity 
  • Understand the relationship between operations
  • Represent and solve multi-step problems using all four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Identify and explain patterns in arithmetic
  • Understand and apply the properties of multiplication and division to determine an unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation

Number Sense and Base Ten

  • Understand the value of a four-digit number 
  • Round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100
  • Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10
  • Use properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic

Number and Operations

  • Demonstrate an understanding of fractions 
  • Identify and represent fractions on a number line 
  • Recognize and generate equivalent fractions
  • Compare two fractions with the same numerator or denominator


  • Categorize shapes based on their attributes 
  • Express the area of a shape as a fraction of a whole

Measurement and Data

  • Tell and write time to the nearest minute 
  • Solve problems involving elapsed time
  • Find solutions to problems that involve liquid volumes and masses of objects 
  • Represent and interpret data
  • Measure length to the nearest quarter inch
  • Understand and calculate area and perimeter using standard and metric measurements


Grade 3 students learn about the history of Massachusetts. They also learn about the history of the Town of North Andover and about famous people and events in Massachusetts’ history. In addition, they read biographies of prominent Massachusetts people in order to learn how they contributed to the state’s history. Students will:

  • Locate the New England states and the Atlantic Ocean
  • Locate major cities and towns, including North Andover, along with major features of the state 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Wampanoag and their way of life
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Pilgrims and the Puritans and their ways of life 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of important events leading up to the American Revolution


By the end of Grade 3 students will be able to:

  • Recognize simple staff notation
  • Perform with expression
  • Distinguish between double and triple meter
  • Perform songs with instrumental accompaniment

By the end of Grade 3 students will be able to:

  • Explore overlapping shapes
  • Distinguish between different types of color; i.e., warm/cool
  • Create a collage from a variety of materials 
  • Create works of art inspired by historic artists 
  • Create art with fiber; i.e.: yarn, wool, raffia etc. 
  • Make aesthetic decisions
