    Speaking and Listening

    • Use the five stages (brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) of the writing process to produce clear, coherent, and organized writing
    • Apply the six traits (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions) of writing to a variety of genres
    • Write a narrative using dialogue, descriptive language, developed characters, and a logical sequencing of events
    • Use research skills to gather information, organize it into paragraphs and sections, and produce a meaningful expository piece of writing
    • Consider both sides of an argument to produce a convincing piece of persuasive writing, based on facts and directed at a specific audience.


    Body management skills are refined as children mature. Participation in activities in the areas of games, sports, and physical fitness, provides opportunities for students to practice a variety of physical skills. Guided instruction allows children to improve skills in a supportive environment. Acceptable social behavior is encouraged through group participation building upon previous grades and with special emphasis on:

    • Development of skills through the use of a variety of sports 
    • Team-building through the use of cooperative games
    • Introduction of fitness activities to promote a healthy active lifestyle
    Parents can help by ensuring that their child is dressed appropriately for Physical Education such as with laced sneakers and clothing that is comfortable for physical activity.


    Civic and character education is vitally important to the development of well-rounded students. Our Building Respectful Community (BRC) initiative highlights the values associated with RAISE through which North Andover students will demonstrate respect. They will think about others before speaking or taking any action. They will appreciate the contributions of others, while showing respect for themselves, other people, personal and/or community property, and the environment.

    • North Andover students will demonstrate achievement. They will exercise their best effort and judgment in all activities in which they participate and will set goals that promote positive academic, social, and personal development.
    • North Andover students will demonstrate inclusion. They have a responsibility to break down barriers by inviting new people into teams, circles of friends, and experiences as they work to be a unified, collaborative community.

    Students will investigate the big ideas of life, physical and earth sciences through research, inquiry and a hands-on approach. In studying the following, students will: 1) ask questions, 2) make predictions, 3) record observations, 4) use materials, and 5) engage in discussions using learned vocabulary.

    Operations and Algebraic Thinking

    • Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems with and without variables

    Numbers and Operations in Base Ten

    • Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers
    • Use place value understanding to fluently add and subtract multi-digit numbers 
    • Use place value understanding to fluently multiply and divide multi-digit whole numbers

    Numbers and Operations – Fractions

    • Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering
    • Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between fractions and decimal notation
    • Order and compare fractions and decimals to one another

    Measurement and Data

    • Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from one unit to another
    • Represent and interpret data in various graph forms


    • Draw and identify lines and angles
    • Classify shapes by the properties of their lines and angles Identify lines of symmetry in geometric figures

    Geometric Measurement

    • Understand the measurement of angles
    • Calculate the area and perimeter of given figures using taught formulas


    Students learn about geography by addressing standards that emphasize political and physical geography and embed five major concepts: location, place, human interaction with the environment, movement, and regions.

    • Immigration to the United States
    • Regions of the United States, including the history, states and capitals, economy, culture, and geography of each unique region
    • Generalities of the North American continent


    By the end of Grade 4 students will be able to:

    • Perform simple melodies on the recorder
    • Analyze musical performances of different styles
    • Identify musical instruments by sight and sound
    • Begin to identify major composers and their works


    By the end of Grade 4 students will be able to:

    • Mix colors
    • Create a drawing using perspective
    • Construct a 3-D form
    • Create works of art inspired by historic artists
    • Use of shading to enhance 2-D works of art
    • Reflect and share reasons for their aesthetic decisions
    • Use composition skills in the creation of art
