LITERACY

    Reading

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION

    Body management skills are refined as children mature. Participation in activities in the areas of games, sports, and physical fitness, provides opportunities for students to practice a variety of physical skills. Guided instruction allows children to improve skills in a supportive environment. Acceptable social behavior is encouraged through group participation building upon previous grades and with special emphasis on:

    • Development of skills through the use of a variety of sports 
    • Team-building through the use of cooperative games
    • Introduction of fitness activities to promote a healthy active lifestyle
    Parents can help by ensuring that their child is dressed appropriately for Physical Education such as with laced sneakers and clothing that is comfortable for physical activity.

    SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL LEARNING

    Civic and character education is vitally important to the development of well-rounded students. Our Building Respectful Community (BRC) initiative highlights the values associated with RAISE through which North Andover students will demonstrate respect. They will think about others before speaking or taking any action. They will appreciate the contributions of others, while showing respect for themselves, other people, personal and/or community property, and the environment.

    • North Andover students will demonstrate achievement. They will exercise their best effort and judgment in all activities in which they participate and will set goals that promote positive academic, social, and personal development.
    • North Andover students will demonstrate inclusion. They have a responsibility to break down barriers by inviting new people into teams, circles of friends, and experiences as they work to be a unified, collaborative community.

    SCIENCE

    Students will explore the big ideas of life, physical, and earth science through an inquiry-based, hands-on approach. In studying the following, students will: 1) ask questions, 2) make predictions, 3) record observations, 4) use materials, and 5) engage in discussions using learned vocabulary.

    • Life Science – Biomes, Classification of Animals
    • Physical Science – Simple Machines/Models 
    • Earth Science - Weather and Climate

    MATHEMATICS

    Operations and Algebraic Thinking

    • Write and interpret numerical expressions
    • Solve and analyze relationships and numerical patterns using given rules
      Number and Operations in Base Ten
      • Understand the place value system from thousandths to billions
      • Demonstrate an understanding of powers of ten
      • Perform all four mathematical operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths
      Numbers and Operations – Fractions
      • Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, including mixed numbers 
      • Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions
      • Multiply fractions or whole numbers by a fraction 
      • Divide fractions or whole numbers by a fraction
      • Solve word problems involving multiplication and division of fractions and mixed numbers
      The Number System
      • Demonstrate the ability to use positive and negative integers
      Measurement and Data
      • Convert like measurement units within standard and metric measurement systems 
      • Use measurement conversions to solve multi-step word problems
      • Understand and apply the concepts of volume
      Geometry
      • Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world mathematical problems Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties

      SOCIAL STUDIES

      From the major pre-Columbian civilizations in the New World through the formation of the original 13 colonies, the Grade 5 social studies curriculum gives students their first concentrated study of the formative years of U.S. history and the formation of a national government under the U.S. Constitution. Students will:

      • Identify the major pre-Columbian civilizations and explains why they declined
      • Describe the journeys of the early European explorers and what each sought and found 
      • Understand the relationship between the natives and major European settlements 
      • Identify major colonial leaders and groups responsible for influencing the 13 colonies 
      • Label the original 13 colonies and describe major regional differences
      • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of the French and Indian War Explain why the Declaration of Independence was created
      • Explain the factors that led to the American victory of the American Revolution 
      • Describe the leaders and their accomplishments throughout the Revolution and early years of the United States

      MUSIC

      By the end of Grade 5 students will be able to:

      • Connect musical knowledge to cultural and historic events
      • Read and perform from standard notation
      • Compose and perform original compositions
      • Identify different musical genres

      ART

      By the end of Grade 5 students will be able to:

      • Mix colors
      • Create a drawing using perspective
      • Construct a 3-D form
      • Create works of art inspired by historic artists
      • Use shading to enhance 2-D works of art
      • Reflect and share their reasons for their aesthetic decisions
      • Use composition skills in the creation of art
