FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Very often the arrival of fall brings with it an increase in asthma symptoms for those children who suffer with this chronic illness. There are many reason for this increase, including a change in weather resulting in the inhalation of cooler air particularly during vigorous exercise, closing windows and turning on heating systems which may stir up dust, the presence of outdoor triggers such as pollens and molds and the return of children to school, where colds and viruses are easily passed from one to another. It is not uncommon to see children have worsening asthma symptoms after “trick or treating” on Halloween or raking leaves in the cold damp weather where they may be exposed to moldy leaves and damp grass.
It is helpful to learn to avoid asthma triggers and to teach your children to wash their hands frequently to avoid exposure to viral illnesses. Children who are allergic to molds should probably avoid raking or playing in leave piles. If your child has received a flu shot in the past, you should contact the primary care physician to see if he or she qualifies to receive it once again this year.
If your child has asthma and you feel that they should keep an inhaler at school, please contact the health office so that we may complete an asthma care plan that describes your child’s symptoms and plan for treatment. Medication consent forms will need to be filled out by parents and the child’s primary care physician. The health office also has a nebulizer, which may be used if that is the prescribed method of treatment. As always, please continue to keep the health office notified of any change in your child’s medical condition.

RecyclingSingle stream what does that mean??Single stream means all recyclables can be put into the same container and will be sorted out later at a transfer station. What that means for you is ease and potentially an increase in your recycling effort. Now you can put paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, and cardboard all in the same container. No more sorting and bringing out multiple red bins. You can place all your recyclable material into one lidded container and mix it all up. Don't be fooled by plastic. If it doesn't have the universal chasing arrow recycling symbol on the packaging, then it cannot be recycled. In addition, Styrofoam cannot be recycled but can be reused and perhaps donated to a shipping store. If we can't recycle it, let's get creative and reuse it or maybe even reduce its use in the first place. Buy only recyclable materials.
