Dear Franklin Families,

Today our 5th grade students are holding a mock election for students in grades 1-5. For the past few weeks students from all grades have been sharing election news on the loud speaker each morning. Today we have the candidates here as well as supporters from both campaigns. We will post our school results in next week’s newsletter.

Monday November 24 and Tuesday November 25 are conference days. The parent conference is one of the occasions during the school year when you get to meet face to face with your child’s teacher to discuss their academic progress. The teacher will have a variety of topics to discuss with you but be sure to ask questions you may have about your child. Please keep in mind that the teacher has to meet with a lot of parents and is on a tight schedule. Most conferences have been scheduled for 15-minute intervals.

Governor Deval Patrick has declared November 2008 as Family Literacy Month. This annual celebration, sponsored by the Massachusetts Family Literacy Consortium and the Massachusetts Reading Leadership Team, underscores the importance of strong literacy skills that help each family member be successful in school and in life.

We know that students do better in school when they are reading, writing, and participating in literacy activities with their families.  Please see the attached page for some family literacy ideas!

Student Council News

Hats on Day is a spreading fundraiser that benefits local charities in communities across the country. The funds raised are used to make young cancer patients’ daily lives more comfortable as they deal with this disease. When students participate in Hats on Day, they are making life happier for children with cancer and showing compassion for the many difficulties young cancer patients face. The Franklin School Student Council is sponsoring Hats on Day on Friday, November 14, 2008, in which each participating student can wear a hat all day in school. Each student who wants to participate must give their classroom teacher $1.00 by Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Thank you for your support!
