Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is an infection of the eye, usually caused by a bacteria or a virus, and is highly contagious.

Symptoms include redness and/or a ‘veiny” appearance of the white of the eye; a watery or mucus-like discharge, which causes crusting of the eyelid, especially noticeable in the morning; and in some cases, complaints of an itching or burning sensation in the eye.

Infection spreads from person to person by direct contact, therefore proper hand washing technique is important, as well as keeping hands away from the eyes.

If you notice symptoms of conjunctivitis, please keep your child home and contact your physician. The usual treatment is an antibiotic ointment or drops.

If your child is diagnosed with conjunctivitis, he/she may return to school after being treated for 24 hours.
