Fifth's Disease

Fifth's Disease is a mild childhood illness that causes a rash. Most of the cases occur in late winter or early spring. Clusters of cases in schools or day-care centers are not unusual.
Fifth's Disease presents in three stages. In stage 1, the symptoms include headache, body ache, sore throat, mild fever, and chills. These symptoms last for two to three days. Stage 2 has no symptoms at all. In stage 3, children get a bright red rash on their cheeks that almost look like slap marks. This "slapped-cheek rash is sometimes followed by a lacy rash on their arms and legs. Adults are less likely to have the third-stage rash but sometimes get swollen and painful joints, especially in the hands and feet. People with Fifth's Disease are usually contagious only during the first stage. By the time they get the rash or joint pains they are no longer contagious.
Fifth's Disease is spread by droplets being sprayed into the air when an infected person sneezes, coughs, or talks. However, it seems to take close, prolonged contact (such as living in the same household or being in the same classroom) to spread Fifth' s Disease.
There is no treatment or vaccine against Fifth's disease. If you are pregnant and believe you have been exposed to someone with Fifth’s disease, it is suggested you notify your primary care physician.
If your child should contract Fifth's Disease, please notify the Health Office. Thank you for your help.
