North Andover has a long tradition of excellence in education. Community support for education extends from a commitment to building and maintaining state-of-the art facilities, to funding and staffing the comprehensive programs that give our students ever-growing opportunities to maximize their achievement in academic studies, in athletic pursuits, in the fine arts, in extracurricular activities, and in internships and other applications of learning to real life projects.
This year, we are opening the newly-constructed North Andover Early Childhood Center, a ten-classroom modular building constructed this spring and summer. The Center is a testament to the shared vision of the School Committee, town officials and the community to provide the best for the children of North Andover. When you visit the site, you will see that The Early Childhood Center is connected via a covered walkway to the Atkinson Elementary School. All preschool classes and two kindergarten classes will be held at the new Center.
In the area of assessment, North Andover students are recognized throughout the state. In the most recent MCAS testing results, North Andover has achieved the highest performance rating in English/Language Arts and a “High” performance rating in Math. Students graduate from North Andover High School to become leaders in many fields, including business, education, and industry.
In the area of curriculum and instruction, teachers and principals have been working under the leadership of our Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Kevin Hutchinson, to implement a district-wide Reading Initiative and a Professional Learning Communities program that will ensure consistency in the delivery of curriculum across all of our schools. Dr. Hutchinson and other North Andover leaders recently conducted workshops on this topic at the summer conference of the Massachusetts Secondary Principals Association.
You will also find that we are in the process of re-designing and updating our North Andover Schools district website. Our goal is to provide you with the latest information about our schools, as well as to celebrate and share the successes of our students. As we make these changes and updates, I encourage you to let me know what you think.
As your new Superintendent, I am very proud to join the school community in North Andover. As we work together for the success of our students, I invite your participation in our schools and in the decisions that affect our schools. Please take the time to contact me, or any of our administrators or school personnel, with your ideas, your suggestions, and your concerns.
