Five student musicians recently were chosen to represent North Andover High School at the Massachusetts Eastern District Music Festival being held January 9, 2010 at Lowell High School. The festival is a yearly event sponsored by the Massachusetts Music Educators Association. After auditions of over 1100 students from
more than 50 public and private schools held in November, 450 students from grades nine through twelve were selected to participate in this prestigious event. The program is offered by the M.M.E.A. as an enrichment opportunity providing a musical experience to talented young people. The students were selected to perform in the Senior District Concert Band, Orchestra, Chorus and Jazz Ensemble. They will rehearse with guest conductors and then perform in a concert to be held January 9, 2010.
North Andover High School has two vocalists participating in the District Chorus: Ben Barker (bass) and Tess Sammartino (alto). The District Concert Band will include John Baylies (tuba), David Baylies (Trumpet) and Scott Chamberlain (tenor saxaphone).
In addition to being accepted into the Eastern District Music Festival, all five NAHS musicians and singers also received All-State Recommendations. An All-State Recommendation enables a student to audition for the All-State Music Festival held annually in March in Boston. To receive an All-State Recommendation the student must finish in the top 50 percent of all those students chosen to participate at the district level.

For the third consecutive year North Andover High School students, led by the NAHS Student Council, have organized a holiday season gift drive known as “Operation Donation.” The school-wide effort involves students donating money during their first period class, and then two students from each class purchase gifts for a specific gender and age. The total raised during the campaign, which concluded December 2, 2009, was $2200, which in turn allowed student leaders to purchase 360 gifts that will go to the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families to help provide holiday gifts for children ages 5 through 17. North Andover High School is proud to have our students involved in such a worthy project.

November, 2009
Twelve Chinese secondary school administrators visited North Andover High School on Friday, November 13, 2009. The visit was a component of the principals’ two-week visit to Massachusetts, part of the US-China Administrator Shadowing Project, which sent NAHS Principal Carla Scuzzarella to Beijing last April. For many of the Chinese principals North Andover High School was their first impression of an American high school.
Upon entering North Andover High School, the principals were greeted with the Chinese National Anthem, played by the NAHS Wind Ensemble. This was followed by the Scarlet and Black Singers performance of Mo Li Hua, a Chinese folk song. Many of the Chinese principals were singing along with the NAHS students. Dr. Scuzzarella, Superintendent Christopher Hottel, and School Committee Chair Stan Limpert welcomed the delegation and invited them to the NAHS library for refreshments, and a panel presentation.
