Principal’s Message, November 2008

Joan McQuade

Thank-you to all who donated so much time and energy behind the scenes, which was instrumental for the success, of our annual fund raiser.   Our traditional magazine drive always brings enthusiasm and excitement to NAMS and as always, the annual pig race was enjoyed by all. Actually, I’m convinced that our faculty has as much if not more fun than our students. Your ongoing support of our PTAC through direct donations and future magazine orders benefits the NAMS’ students all year long. Also, our PTAC continues to add beautiful landscaping to our school grounds. All of us appreciate the efforts to help keep NAMS looking great.

Conferences will be Monday, November 24, and Tuesday November 25th. District wide, we have broken conference day into two half days. NAMS’ conference times will run from 11:30-2:05 each day. Academic teams will be sending home detailed information.

Our conference format will continue to be student portfolio based with students’ reporting out to their parents. Primarily, the teachers will take a facilitation role but are also available both days for further conversations with parents if requested. For our new and /or 6th grade parents, I have included the FAQs that we published last year to clear up any confusion that some of you may have. Related arts teachers will also be available on that day to conference with parents.

Under the NAPS Building Respectful Communities initiative, we have participated in a few new opportunities for our students. In connection with the North Andover Youth center our 6th grade teachers and students were involved in team building activities at the ropes course.   Feedback on the experience was very positive, and we hope to continue the program. Thank you to the PTAC for funding this experience. Also, the Rachel’s Challenge program came to NAMS’ last week, and we have started the process of bringing many of the ideas to NAMS. We have a group of students who have committed to be “Friends of Rachel” and are taking a leadership role as we implement Rachel’s philosophies into our building culture.

November 4th is an all day curriculum day for teachers. We will be exploring the standards based and differentiated instruction connection at a deeper level. We also plan to systemize our pyramid of intervention. This will provide for a more consistent approach building wide for students who are not grasping specific concepts.

In closing, enjoy the upcoming holidays.   As always, please contact your child’s teachers, guidance counselor or administration if you have any comments or concerns on any issue.

Student Council Information

Student Council is a terrific opportunity for those attending North Andover Middle School to get involved, take a leadership role, make a difference, and meet new friends. During meetings, students generate ideas and collaborate to implement these initiatives. Last year, Student Council coordinated several service learning projects that were a huge success thanks to the encouragement, and participation of the students and staff at NAMS, as well as various community members. All students are welcome to participate. Any student interested in joining Student Council should listen to the morning announcements to find out when the next meeting will be. Signs are often posted around the school to remind students about upcoming meeting dates and current projects.  Right now the Student Council is organizing a NAMS Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Please read below for further details.

NAMS Food Drive: Put the Giving Back into Thanksgiving

Please help make the Student Council NAMS Food Drive a success! Below are the items the People's Pantry would like the different grade levels to donate. Please send in donations to your child’s homeroom! There will also be a box in the office.

6th Grade: coffee & tea

7th Grade: canned beans & cranberry sauce

8th Grade: boxes/bags of rice

The People's Pantry is located in North Andover, across from the North Parish Church. Please help them continue to provide groceries and a Thanksgiving meal to over 120 families in need.  Many in our community are greatly in need. The last day of the food drive will be Friday, November 14.
