NAMS MUSIC ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

8th Grade Band and Jazz Band - Great East Permission slips have been handed out and are due by Feb 8th.

 
Listen to recordings of your band music!!! All of the music we play in band is available on http://www.jwpepper.com
Search for the name of the song, filter by "Concert Band" then click "Listen" Be sure to check the composers name as some pieces have the same name by different poeple.

   

Private lessons: It is highly recommend that all students take private lessons on their instrument. See your music teacher for a lesson registration form. Forms can be returned to Mr. Nelson or Mr. Ignos.

NAMS Music Curriculum


6th Grade Band (Full year/ every other day)
Students will learn to play their choice of a band instrument. Rental or purchase of an instrument and band method book is required. Students will select instruments during the first week of school. Instrument options are flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. Percussion students will learn to play the bell kit and snare drum. Band will be offered over two blocks every other day. Oboe, bassoon, and french horn are also available to those students who sign up for private lessons. One block will be with their instrument group and one block will be full band rehearsal. Students will be expected to participate in 3 night concerts during the year.

After school offering: JAZZ BAND- Jazz Band meets once a week for 60 minutes and requires two evening concerts during the year. All band instruments are allowed to audition. Guitar, bass, piano, and drum set players are also welcome.

6th Grade Music: WORLD MUSIC
(Every day for 1 trimester)
Students will use their voice as the primary means of exploring music from around the world. We will first focus on developing the voice through unison singing and then transition to beginning part-singing. Students will also learn to read and write music, participate in movement activities, and get experience with percussion instruments. At the end of the trimester, all students will be required to participate in a night performance.

 

7th /8th Grade Band (Full year/ every other day)
Students will continue to study the fundamentals of playing their instrument and perform more complex band music. Band will be offered over two blocks every other day. One block will be with their instrument group and one block will be full band rehearsal. Beginners are allowed in 7th grade band, but 8th graders need at least 1 year of experience to join. Students are expected to perform in 3 evening concerts during the year.

After school offering: JAZZ BAND- Jazz Band meets once a week for 60 minutes and requires two evening concerts during the year. All band instruments are allowed to audition. Guitar, bass, piano, and drum set players are also welcome.

7th / 8th Grade Music: AMERICAN MUSIC
(Every day for 1 trimester)
Students will use their voice as the primary means of exploring music from America. Study will take students from early American folk music to modern day popular music. We will first focus on developing the voice through unison singing and then transition to beginning part-singing. Students will also learn to read and write music and develop basic keyboard skills. At the end of the trimester, all students will be required to participate in an evening performance.
