ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE – Global student learning and growing

Parents, give your students a global education.  Let them experience a foreign culture, learn a second language, and discover what they are capable of.  Six students have gone out from North Andover, and seven have come in, under the program.  Students need to prepare for global living and working.  The time to learn is in high school.  The time to prepare is in middle school.

The long term program is a full academic year.  Most students go on exchange during junior year.  Parents and students should therefore determine what courses the student must take to graduate, and how they will fit those courses into three years at NAHS.  Additional credit may be available for study abroad.  There is also a short term program during the summer.

Rotary is international.  Rotary here prepares students before they leave on exchange.  Students experience life in a foreign country by living it, staying with local families and attending the local high school.  They travel and see sights they otherwise would not see, and they make lifelong friends along the way.  All this is under the supervision of Rotary in the host country.  At the same time, students learn self-reliance, independence and responsibility.  Maturity can soar.

Learn more at www.exchangestudent.org and by contacting Rotarian Bob Ford at rpf@fordlaw.net.  Also, experience the program by getting involved.  Host an exchange student for three months, and observe the program in action.  Offer your students the world.

Senior Center Needs Volunteers
As part of the Friendly Visitor and Telephone Reassurance Program, the North Andover Senior Center is looking for volunteers (over age 18) to visit and telephone senior citizens who need outside contact. If you are interested in volunteering or know of a North Andover senior citizen who may benefit from this program, please contact Sandy Flaherty at sflaherty@townofnorthandover.com
Recycling old shoes
All that back to school shopping leave you with unwanted sneakers at home??? There is a permanent recycling bin in the Converse store on Main Street. Instead of throwing them in the trash - think about recycling them downtown.
CABLE ACCESS MEDIA CHANNEL CHANGE
The CAM-Ed channel on Comcast is moving from Channel 10 to Channel 99, effective 4/17/12.
Legos Wanted!!
Donate your Lego pieces! The Kittredge Elementary Lego Club is in desperate need of more Lego pieces. Happily, our Lego Club keeps growing but our supply keeps dwindling. Because these are small pieces, they are easily misplaced and lost. If you, or anybody you know, would like to donate Lego pieces, please contact Sandy DeVita at sandydevita@verizon.net
Think Before You Throw - Freecycle!
Do you have anything you no longer need or that isn't being used and is too good to trash? Then give it away (Freecycle)! By gifting items we no longer need, we reduce solid waste, save taxes and build community relations. This is the ultimate form of recycling - reusing and reducing. Everything posted must be free, legal and "G" rated. Check out the website and sign up at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NASWAC/
