Art Fair
The Art Fair is held in conjunction with the Spring Ice Cream Social.  The students’ artwork is collected throughout the year for this event.   Families are then invited to view the artwork, and enjoy an ice ream sundae with the artists.  A significant number of volunteers are needed to label, block and hang the artwork throughout the school halls in order to the Art Fair to be a success.   The artwork is hung over a three to four day period during school hours only.

Beautification Committee
The School Beautification Committee is responsible for the maintenance and beautification of various areas on the school grounds.  This committee typically meets three times a year (early in the school year, late winter and again in the spring) to do the gardening work.  The committee members are responsible for weeding, planting spring bulbs and fall mums, maintaining and mulching the flowerbeds, trimming shrubs and other jobs to tidy and beautify the school grounds.  No experience is needed, just a desire to be outdoors and help keep the school grounds looking nice.

Bookfair Committee
The sergeant School Bookfair Committee is responsible for running two (fall and spring) Scholastic Bookfairs.  The fall bookfair takes place in October, in conjunction with Breakfast Buddies.  The spring bookfair is usually held in March or April.  This committee needs a significant number of volunteers to serve as cashiers (training provided) and to help children locate books.
1.)    Fall Bookfair:  Volunteers are needed throughout the school day, during Breakfast Buddies (starting at 7:15 a.m.), and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
2.)    Spring Bookfair:  Volunteers are needed starting at 8:30 a.m. and lasting throughout the school day.
We are asking volunteers to work in 2 hour shifts.  In addition we need parents to serve on the Planning Committee.  Duties include helping to plan the fall and spring bookfairs and overseeing events as they take place.  The time commitment is minimal and this is a great way to help out Sargent School.

Breakfast Buddies
Breakfast Buddies is a fun event where parents and their children can enjoy breakfast together before school.  Six to seven volunteers are needed on each day that week to perform one or more of the following tasks:

1.    Set up buffet table with floral arrangements and food/condiments
2.    Serve at buffet table and replenish food items
3.    Man beverage table
4.    Prepare hot cocoa in advance
5.    Set up coffee pots with hot water for tea
6.    Assist with clean-up
7.    Misc tasks such as grocery shop etc.

Copying & Laminating Committee
Volunteers are needed twice a week for copying and laminating work in the office.  A rotating schedule will be set with Monday mornings being a definite, the second day to be determined.  Training will be provided.

Destination Imagination
Destination Imagination (DI) is a national program that involves children in a creative, non-traditional, problem solving environment encouraging teamwork and innovative thinking.  Children in grades 3rd through 5th work together in teams of seven to solve one of five challenges.  Ask anyone who has been involved with DI and they will tell you that it is a fantastic learning experience.  The teams begin meeting in the fall and the program culminates in a regional tournament in the spring.  Parent volunteers act as Managers and assistant Managers for the teams, and each team requires an Appraiser (judge) as well.    Please consider becoming involved in Destination Imagination by becoming a parent volunteer.  No prior experience is necessary- DI provides the training.  Encourage your child to be on a team.   Your PTO pays for the teams’ entry fees.

Fundraising Committee
Without this committee, we would not be able to sponsor all the wonderful programs that the children enjoy throughout the year.  Past fundraisers include Holiday Catalog sales and Math Blast.  This committee is looking for new and innovative ways to fundraise.

Holiday Shopping
Holiday Shopping is an event held on the same night as the Holiday Social, but it is a completely separate event.  It is a shop which is set up in the hallways of the school for the children only to be able to purchase holiday gifts for their friends and families.  The items are reasonably priced (from fifty cents to $3.00). Each child will have a “personal shopper” to help them with their purchases.  It is great fun for everyone.  We need a large number of volunteers to form our team of “personal shoppers”.  Volunteers commit to one hour blocks of time.   Help bring in the holiday spirit and join this important committee.

Holiday Social
This is a very popular Sargent event.  It is a family fun night that has included games, crafts, face painting, bake walk, and holiday shopping.  Santa even stops by from the North Pole to have photos taken with our wonderful children.  Our 5th graders’ concession stand keeps everyone fueled and happy for the evening’s festivities.  Needless to say, we need MANY, MANY volunteers to make this event a success.  Signing up for this committee means that you will be working the night of the Holiday Social.

Holiday Social Planning Committee
We are looking for four volunteers.  Duties include helping to plan the Holiday Social, begin preliminary work, assist with following up with, and scheduling volunteers for the Holiday Social.  The time commitment is flexible.

Holiday Social Set-up Committee
Four volunteers are needed to serve on this committee.  Duties include helping to set-up the craft tables, games, bake walk, and decorate.  This is a one day (day of the social) commitment.

Hospitality Committee
This committee provides baked goods, and sets up coffee for PTO meetings.   Having refreshments at meetings helps everyone feel welcome and relaxed.

Ice Cream Social Committee
There are two ice cream socials each year; the Welcome Back Ice Cream Social (fall) and the Art Fair Ice Cream Social (spring).  Both are wonderful family events.
1.    Welcome Back Ice Cream Social:  Families Re-connect while enjoying ice cream sundaes during the first week of school.  Volunteers are needed to help scoop, serve fixing’s, set-up and clean up. It’s a great way to start the school year off right.
2.    Art Fair Ice Cream Social:  this is held the same evening as the Art Fair.  Families enjoy ice cream as they stroll through the school viewing the students’ art.  Volunteers are needed for set-up, serving and cleanup.  One evening commitment.

Literacy Program Assistants
Six to eight volunteers are needed to help with the literacy program.  The time commitment is one hour, every 2-3 weeks.  Volunteers would be involved in refilling and organizing literacy materials as well as leveling new reading material.  The timing is extremely flexible as these jobs can be done at any time during the day.

Playground Maintenance & Clean-Up
Help oversee on-going playground maintenance, including the purchase and installation of new equipment, follow-up any safety issues, arrange for mulch to be delivered and spread, and periodically help clean up trash and debris.

Teacher Appreciation Week
This is the week set aside throughout the district to show our teachers and staff how much we appreciate what they do for our children.  At Sargent we show our appreciation in the following ways:
1.    Breakfast each morning.
2.    A Luncheon on the curriculum day of that week.
3.    A drawing for a homemade dinner each day
4.    Hand-made gifts for the teachers and staff (coordinated by Room Mothers with students)
5.    Drop off and morning playground supervision
