PRESIDENT'S NOTES
Thank you to everyone who supported last week’s Book Fair and Breakfast Buddies. We had a fabulous turnout to both events! We would like to especially thank our Breakfast Buddies committee chairs Chris Farr and Lina Hunter and our Book Fair committee chairs Kathleen Willis and Paula Kushnir. You all did a great job!
As you know, our playground has been closed and the PTO, along with the administration, will soon begin discussing strategy for raising funds to replace the old structure. This is an opportunity to rally our forces to create a positive outcome out of bad news. As we form committees for the new playground, this is the time to step forward and help with your time, energy and expertise. If any of the following describe you, please consider joining the committee:
- experience in soliciting corporate donations
- experience in grant writing
- willingness to help install the playground if that need arises
We will plan time at our Nov. 5th PTO meeting for a discussion of the playground.
Next, please mark your calendars for the following important meetings/forums.
- Sargent PTO Meeting: Wednesday November 5th, 7:00 PM in the cafeteria. Lydia Crabtree of the Enrichment Council will give a short presentation. We plan to discuss the playground, including the discovery and bidding process, as well as cost that may be involved. We will also discuss fundraising revenues to date and plan for allocating those funds.
- Redistricting Advisory Committee: Public Hearing, October 28th, 7PM at the North Andover Middle School. (Note: parents can submit their questions/suggestions to the Advisory Committee via email at redistricting@northandover.k12.ma.us
- Superintendent Search Committee “Open Mike Event” & Electronic Focus Group: the open mike event is scheduled for Thursday, November 6th from 6:00-7:00 PM at the Town Hall Conference Room on the 2nd floor. Parents unable to attend can submit information via email link to suptsearch@northandover.k12.ma.us
Thanks to all of our families shopping on-line via www.OneCause.com. With 500+ vendors available the site is easy to use and provides easy money for our school.
We wish you all a Happy Halloween! Have a good week… Snowy and Mary

Scholastic Book Fair: Another book fair success! Last week, hundreds of students, parents, and teachers visited the book fair and made some wonderful selections for their homes and classroom libraries. Sargent School will receive 25% of the total purchases in addition to reward points for free books for the school. Many, many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who so willingly gave their time. THE 14th ANNUAL HOLIDAY SOCIAL
Mark your calendars!! This year’s Holiday Social is scheduled for Friday, November 21, from 5:30 – 8:30. This great event features games, crafts, food, fifth grade activities, pictures with Santa, holiday shopping and more. Look for volunteer sign-up sheets coming home in back packs next week. We’ll be looking for help running games, selling refreshments, taking pictures with Santa and many other tasks. This event is a family favorite and we can use all the help we can get!
Holiday Shopping is held the same night as the Holiday Social (November 21st.) For those of you not familiar with this tradition, "Stores" are set up for the children to do a little holiday shopping on their own (with a volunteer to help them.) Volunteer forms will be sent out shortly. Please consider volunteering an hour for a very enjoyable "night of shopping". We had a successful event last year and need your help for another one! This is a very fun night for the children! Please call or email with any questions: Laura Freedman, 681-9889, freedmanfamily@comcast.net; or Gen Hiller, 208-1408, cghiller@aol.com.
Meadow Farms Catalog Pick Up is TODAY! Come to the school and get your boxes between 4 and 8 PM this evening. No boxes can remain at the school overnight. We will call your home phone starting at 7:15 PM if you have not arrived to pick up your box.
Prizes for “Online Only” catalog sales. If you had an ‘online only’ order, your prize will be at the school this evening. Any prizes not picked up tonight will go into backpacks Tuesday (as long as they are not too big).
5th grade fundraising
On-line shoppers: SchoolPop is now OneCause. The old web address will redirect you to the new website or you can log in directly through http://www.onecause.com . This program could potentially help fund a whole new playground! We generated over $1000 in cash last year, with only 4 active supporters! Many merchants have free shipping or free ship to store offers and several sites have exclusive on-line outlet deals. Ordering holiday gifts for the far away relatives? Beat the Mall madness! Hundreds of popular catalogs are available to do your usual shopping while benefiting our school! Save money, gas and never fight for a parking space or spot at the register again!

RECYCLING
Single stream what does that mean?? Single stream means all recyclables can put into the same container and will be sorted out later at a transfer station. What that means for you is ease and potentially an increase in your recycling effort. Now you can put paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, cardboard all in the same container, no more sorting and bringing out multiple red bins. You can place all your recyclable material into one lidded container and mix it all up. Check out what can be recycled at http://www.townofnorthandover.com/Pages/NAndoverMA_Recycling/glance
Don't be fooled by plastic, if it doesn't have the universal chasing arrow recycling symbol on the packaging then it can not be recycled. In addition, Styrofoam can not be recycled but can be reused and perhaps donated to a shipping store. If we can't recycle it lets get creative and reuse it or maybe even reduce its use in the first place. Buy only recyclable materials.
Go Green Tip of the Week: clean up Your Laundry Act
Remember to check your dryer vent periodically. Removing lint build up will not only save energy, but help prevent a fire. Consider air-drying clothes. It prolongs the life of the fabric and in winter months helps humidify the house. Pajamas and synthetic fleece fabrics air dry quickly with no piling or static cling!Did you know about 90% of the energy used for washing clothes are for heating the water? Reduce your energy use by using less water and cooler water. Switching the temperature setting from hot to warm can cut a load’s energy use in half!
SARGENT CHESS CLUB:
Chess Fun will meet on Mondays from 2:50 pm to 4:00 pm in room 212, Ms Stuffle’s room. Our first get together will be on Monday Nov. 3, 2008. Chess fun is opened to 3rd, 4th, 5th graders regardless of their chess abilities and is exclusively about learning to play chess, improving strategy and chess play. The kids should bring a snack. Parents, please let me know that your child will be coming by either calling me or e-mailing me and by providing your child’s name and your phone numbers. This process is important as it will let me know how many children will be attending, how many chess sets will be needed and how many volunteers will be needed as well. I am also looking for volunteers, although chess knowledge is a plus it is not required. Thank you. Nathalie Stephan-Wiles 978 685-0131 natwiles@comcast.net
