THE 14th ANNUAL HOLIDAY SOCIAL - November 21, from 5:30 – 8:30
Please look for volunteer sign-up sheets in backpacks today. We need many volunteers to make this night a success, so consider taking a shift to help sell tickets, run a game, sell food, or for one of the many other jobs available. Moms, Dads and older siblings (7th grade and above) are welcome to volunteer. Bakers can also sign up to bake something for the Bake Walk on a separate sheet going home today. Please fill out the forms and return to the school if you can help! Contact Michelle Gabriel at 978-258-1930 or ma_gabriel@yahoo.com for more information.

Holiday Shopping is held the same night as the Holiday Social (November 21st.)  For those of you not familiar with this tradition, "Stores" are set up for the children to do a little holiday shopping on their own (with a volunteer to help them.)  Volunteer forms will be sent out shortly.  Please consider volunteering an hour for a very enjoyable "night of shopping".  We had a successful event last year and need your help for another one!  This is a very fun night for the children!  Please call or email with any questions:  Laura Freedman, 681-9889, freedmanfamily@comcast.net; or Gen Hiller, 208-1408, cghiller@aol.com.

UNICEF Boxes are NOW DUE:  For those of you whose children took part in our recent Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF charity we would like to say THANK-YOU for your encouragement and involvement!  Please have your child turn in their box by this Friday, November 7th.  This is a voluntary program sponsored by the PTO, and we thank you for helping us continue the Sargent tradition of giving to UNICEF.  Jill Romano and Cindy Custer, Community Involvement.

COLLECTION PROGRAMS
Our BoxTops are boxed up and on their way! We’ll have the official word in December, but it looks like we may have set a new school record!
Congratulations Clipping Captains, job well done! This month, send in your Campbell’s, Pepperidge Farm & Swanson, Labels for Education UPC’s for our first submission Nov. 21st. Thank you to those who sent in the Sunday Circular bonus sheets! We have completed 3 entirely for 600 bonus points and have several more partially completed for a few 100 more points!
Our juice pouch collections are really taking off! We have submitted 300 pouches to date! Classrooms are now collecting pouches from snack time as well as Nabisco snack wrappers for recycling by TerraCycle. Our school receives about 2 cents for each one saved from the trash. Look for the collection bag in your classroom today & remember, empty plastic water bottles can now go into the red recycling bins!

RECYCLING
Go Green!
Next Monday, November 10th, Sargent School will kick off Recycling Awareness Week to celebrate the upcoming America Recycles Day, November 15th. America Recycles Day (ARD) is a national campaign to raise recycling awareness.  The campaign asks people to pledge to increase their recycling efforts and buy more recycled-content products. Take the pledge today at: http://www.nrc-recycle.org/takethepledge.aspx
The more you know, the more motivated you’ll be to make the effort! The facts can be startling. We will be educating students on what recycling efforts are being made at the school and how their classroom can have a big impact on helping to reduce the amount of waste our school generates. Did you know our school colors are blue & green? Let’s really show our school spirit by making the effort to keep our skies blue and our planet green!

Go Green Tip of the Week: Recycle Batteries
After Halloween & the end of Day Light Savings Time, there are dead flashlight, camera & smoke detector batteries. Only alkaline batteries are disposable in the trash. If you have any rechargeable batteries, they can be recycled at Radio Shack free of charge (no pun intended). Batteries from your power tools, cordless phones & lap tops are usually Ni-Cd batteries and require special disposal due to the toxic metals they contain. Ni-Cd batteries do reduce overall waste due to their rechargeable feature and all the metals in them can be recycled when disposed of properly. Lead Acid batteries are commonly found in emergency lighting and computer back-up systems.  To identify lead acid batteries, look for the letters Pb on the battery. These can be taken to the DPW the 3rd Saturday of every month for disposal as well as any button type batteries (found in watches, sound books, keychain remotes, small electronics).

Enrichment Council - History Lesson: Marie Curie
Third, fourth, and fifth graders at Sargent Elementary school will learn about the life of famous female scientist Marie Curie on Wednesday, November 5th. Sponsored by the North Andover Schools Enrichment Council, the Historical Perspectives for Children program will tell Marie’s story using characters and costume changes, slides, and sound effects. Marie Curie is best known for discovering radioactive elements polonium and radium, and for being the first person to win two Nobel Peace prizes. Her dramatic story is sure to inspire children to pursue their own interest in science and use their own talents to the fullest. For questions or more information, contact Lydia Crabtree at lmcrabtree@comcast.net or 978-683-6169.

Community Announcements
LAZARUS HOUSE NEEDS OUR HELP!   Lazarus House, a long standing community organization that provides services to people who are in dire need of life's most basic necessities, is currently in desperate need of food donations to feed their guests.  They provide a food pantry that serves more than 200 families each week, a soup truck, and provide daily meals to their guests 365 day a year. During November and December they distribute an additional 4000 holiday meal boxes. By this time of year they normally have more than 500 of those holiday food boxes finished.  Due to the shortage of food they barely have the food needed to sustain their daily needs.
During the month of November, your Community Involvement Committee will be holding a food drive.  Baskets for each grade will be placed in the school entry, and we would greatly appreciate your contribution:
            Pre-K – 1st grade: Kid flavored oatmeal/cold cereal
2nd grade:              Peanut butter or ketchup/mayonnaise
3rd grade:              Pancake mix or syrup or canned fruit
4th grade:              Pasta, mac and cheese or rice
5th grade:              Canned soup or vegetable
If every student in Sargent brings in just one item, we can really make a difference!  Please no breakable containers.  Any questions just email Community Involvement volunteer Jan Alicardi at Jalicardi@gmail.com
