Thank you to all parents who attended the Open Houses and stopped by our PTO table. We had an overwhelming number of volunteers sign up for our committees. All volunteers can expect a phone call within the next few weeks.
Our next PTO meeting is Wednesday October 1st, 7 PM in the cafeteria. Our Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kevin “Hutch” Hutchinson and our Principal, Beth Kline, will be discussing the strides we’ve made in curriculum development. There will be time to ask questions.
Coming soon on the PTO website will be information detailing how your donation dollars are spent. Along these lines, we’ve had a great response to our direct donation letter. We appreciate, and will report on, every dollar we receive.
DESTINATION IMAGINATION - the world’s largest creative problem solving program! DI is a national program that involves children in a fun, creative, non-traditional, problem-solving environment encouraging teamwork and innovative thinking. We are organizing DI teams right now and are looking for K -2 for our Rising Stars as well as 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to participate. Students will work together in teams of up to 7 to solve one of five exciting Challenges. The program culminates in a regional tournament in March of 2009, with the opportunity to move on to state and world championships! Parent volunteers are needed to act as Team Managers, Assistant Managers, and tournament Appraisers for each team - no prior experience is necessary. DI provides the basic training for all volunteers and our PTO generously pays the team entry fees. For more info and to preview this year’s challenges go to www.madikids.org. Please see the upcoming DI flyer for more info or email the Sargent DI Coordinator, Jeremy Dalmerat jeremydalmer@comcast.net (if no reply then call 617-417-1901).

5th Grade Committee We would like to thank the 5th grade students who did an amazing job selling t-shirts and teachers notes at the open houses last week. You should be very proud of them. They raised over $700 to support their activities this year. Many parents commented on how polite and hard working the children were. The parents of children in the lower grades thought it was wonderful that the children were doing the fundraising themselves. The 5th grade is looking for volunteer’s parents and students to help with the many activities throughout the year. Please contact one of the members if you are interested in participating. The 5th graders will be running the pizza and hotdog table at the Holiday Social on November 21st. Information and volunteer sheets will be going home closer to the event. We will be having several fundraisers this year that support the 5th grade activities. Our first major fundraiser is the Meadow Farms Catalog, 50% of all sales go directly to the 5th graders. If you have any questions please contact Susan Flaherty – dancatsue@comcast.net, Maggie Krupkowski – maggie421@comcast.net or Jill Romano – maddieromano@comcast.net

SARGENT ANNUAL COAT DRIVE begins Oct.1st: Coats for Kids, sponsored by Anton’s
Cleaners, begins October 1st and runs through December 31st. Please help out by bringing in your gently used coats of all sizes for children, adults and babies – please no rips, tears, broken zippers or permanent stains – coats you would give to a friend to wear. The coats will be cleaned and distributed in MA and NH to those in need this holiday season. This year Sargent will participate in the SCHOOL REWARDS program, which honors the top three elementary schools that collect the most coats per student enrolled. So clean out your closets and get involved in supporting this worthy cause! A large green, marked bin will be located in the main entrance for you to drop off your donations beginning October 1st. Please see the flyer in your child’s backpack this week for more information. Jill Romano and Heather Ursu, Community Involvement.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle -Now that the summer is over I am sure everyone has bought new clothes and shoes for their little one. So what do you do with the old clothes and sneakers? You can donate clothes to many local charities, they are in special need of children's clothing and you can drop off your used, old sneakers in the permanent sneaker collection box near the principal’s office. The sneakers are separated into their three components and each is used to support the Nike-Reuse a shoe program. No sandals, dress shoes or cleats please. With a little leg work you can find an alternate place for any item besides dumping it in the trash, refer to www.cleanup.org for suggestions. Just another way to reduce, reuse and recycle!!
