Welcome to The Annie L. Sargent School. We hope that you continue to access our web page as a means of communication and to learn about our school community. Sargent School serves students in kindergarten through grade five. Our staff, students and parents all work together to create a nurturing and caring community. Our focus on teaching and learning are evident throughout the school. Teachers are highly trained to meet the needs of all students.
This year all students will be exposed to a North Andover district initiative, Building Respectful Community. This district initiative will introduce a common language to all students. The letters R.A.I.S.E. stand for respect, achievement, inclusion, service and empathy. Teachers and students will work together using this vocabulary to solve conflicts, diffuse bullying, and build a strong sense of caring and community within our school. We will celebrate what these words mean each month at school wide meetings.
At Sargent School we stress the importance of literacy development. Our students are encouraged to read, write and wonder. This year, through the consistent use of Reading Street, students will have large blocks of time to focus on language arts and reading. Our school library will re-open in late fall to support our concentration on the importance of books in a child’s life.
I encourage you to get involved in our school. Our PTO is active in every aspect of the school. Strong parental involvement in a child’s education leads to success for the child. I look forward to working with all of you this year. If you have any suggestions or questions, please feel free to email or call the school.
Sincerely,
Judith Rogers Ed.D.

Dear Sargent School Families
Today the fourth graders will have Art Quest which is sponsored by the Enrichment Council.
Also, our kindergartens are going through an accreditation process through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). All kindergarten families will receive a family survey today. Please take the time to fill it out and return it to your child's teacher. We are excited about this process as we will be able to take a closer look at our early childhood practice.
Sargent School Council met last week. Faculty representatives are Susan Scandore, Sue Consoli, and Jeanne Caron. Parent representatives are Elaine Manke, Lisa Torbin-Shaw and Chris Veary-Bagley. School Council meets monthly. Meetings are open to the school community.
Many thanks to our Green Team, Jeanne Caron, Lisa Conti, Cindy Custer, Lynne Khater and Kristen Lovett for bringing recycling awareness to our school. Stay tuned for next month's Green Assembly.
The district web page continues to have H1N1 updates. Our attendance has been much better in the past week. Our students are all taking necessary precautions, including frequent hand washing and coughing and sneezing into their inner elbow. Thank you for reinforcing these measures at home.
Next week we will have parent/teacher conferences. We will also have early dismissal. Please make sure that your child is aware of how they are going home each day.
See you at the Holiday Social!

Dear Sargent Families,
The Holiday Social was a great success! Many thanks to Natalie Howard and her committee for organizing such a fun evening for students and families. It was apparent that everyone was enjoying themselves! Congratulations to our PTO on another successful event.
Parent/Teacher conferences are Monday and Tuesday of this week.
We also now have a parent lending library! We have many books that are available to assist parents with many questions and concerns about raising children. These books are located outside of the main office. If you wish to check out a book, please fill out the card in the back pocket and give the card to Judy Farrow in the office. We hope that you find this a helpful resource. If you know any titles that you think we should add to our collection, please let me know.
You may have heard your child tell you that on November 30th we are going to change the way that students are called to the buses at the end of the day. Instead of waiting in the cafeteria, students will be called directly to the bus, by number. Walkers and pick-ups will remain the same. We are hopeful that this method will be calmer for all students. It will also help the buses leave in a more timely manner.
December 2nd is Pajama Day at Sargent! To celebrate meeting the fundraising goal for catalog sales, all students can wear pajamas to school. Please make sure that your child wears safe pajamas as regular classroom activities will take place that day. Also, please..no bedroom slippers.
I hope that you all have a very good Thanksgiving holiday.
Sincerely,
Judy Rogers

Dear Sargent School Families
I hope that you had a nice Thanksgiving and a few days with family and friends. It was good to see so many of you at parent conferences last week.
Today, November 30th, is the last day for Sally Velardi, Sargent's Cafeteria Manager. Sally is retiring after a very successful career with the NA Schools. We wish her the very best. I am happy to report that Diana Salvo will be our new Kitchen Supervisor. Diana has been working with Sally and knows all of our lunch routines!
We will implement our new procedure for bus dismissal at the end of today. Students will walk directly from the classroom to the bus. We hope that this is a more efficient and calmer way for our students to leave at the end of the day. Buses may arrive a few minutes earlier than before.
Wednesday, December 2 is pajama day! All students may wear pajamas to school in honor of meeting the fundraising goal Please have your child wear shoes and no slippers.
Reminder
Kindergarten Family Surveys are due this week. Thank you!
Have a great week!

Hello Sargent Families
The snow has arrived! Please make sure that your children are dressed for the cold and inclement weather. When it is snowy, students need boots, a warm coat, mittens or gloves and a hat. If students are going to play in the snow then they should wear snow pants. We will have outdoor recess in the snow. Students should bring sneakers to school for inside wear and also PE.
The principal search is under way. If you think that you might want to be on the search committee, please email Judy Farrow at farrowj@northandover.k12.ma.us by Wednesday. Those interested must be present at every interview and meeting listed. Mr. Hottel wishes to form the search committee by Friday, December 11th. If you wish to be considered. please provide a brief written statement (a paragraph or so) explaining why you wish to be involved and attributes that you would bring to the selection process.
Please know that I will work closely with staff and students to provide a smooth transition.
Our Green Assembly will take place on Friday. Thank you to Lisa Conti, Lynne Khater, Cindy Custer and Jeanne Caron for organizing this event. It will be interactive and a good learning experience for all students.
We will have a new report card this year. There is a brochure on the district web site that explains the report card and also answers some FAQ. As always, please let your child's teacher or me know if you have any further questions.
This week classroom teachers will participate in professional development on the new reading series, Reading Street. This week they will learn more about the technology component.
Have a terrific week!
Sincerely, Judy Rogers

Thank you for sending the children to school with the appropriate winter outerwear. They seem to enjoy playing outside and in the snow.
On Wednesday the H1N1 flumist will be available at Sargent School. Please make sure that you return the necessary paperwork if you want your child to receive the vaccine.
Thank you to Lisa Conti, Lynne Khater and Cindy Custer for organizing Friday's Green Assembly. The students in grades 3-5 enjoyed the game show on recycling "Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?" Kudos to our fifth graders for excellent teamwork on answering questions!
Report cards will be sent home with students on December 18th. Please sign the envelope and return the envelope to school. The parent guide to the report card is located online on the district web page.

Dear Sargent Families,
On Wednesday all students will participate in a RAISE assembly. Students will demonstrate what they are learning about Building a Respectful Community. Teachers will also participate, offering students ways to celebrate RAISE. All students should wear a team shirt to school on Wednesday.
We would like to air our assembly on the North Andover TV Network. If you are able to videotape the assembly, please contact me so that I can set up the training with NAMCAM at the High School studio.
The snow is here! Students need boots, snow pants, a warm jacket, a hat and mittens or gloves. When there is outdoor recess, everyone goes out to play. Staying indoors is not an option. Thank you for your help reminding the students to dress appropriately.
I hope that you all have a happy, healthy and safe holiday season and New Year!
Sincerely, Judy Rogers |

Greetings Sargent School Families,
I hope you are enjoying the long weekend with your children.
If you drive your child to and from school, you will notice a sign on Abbott Street. The purpose of the sign board is to remind you that students are not allowed to be dropped off or picked up at the Abbott Street entrance. Please enter via Johnson Street for both drop- off and pick-up. The North Andover police are closely monitoring this situation. We don't want any students to be in harm's way. Please help us out by adhering to our drop off and pick-up procedures. We appreciate your compliance.
This Friday, January 22nd, will be Hat Day at Sargent School. For $1.00 students may wear a hat to school! The funds that we collect will be donated to the American Red Cross for those in peril in Haiti. Thank you for your assistance with this service project.
On Thursday evening, January 21st, Cynthia Curtis, our Reading Specialist, and Jeanne Caron, a fifth grade teacher, will present a workshop on the components of reading and strategies you can use at home to help develop reading comprehension with your child. The workshop will run from 7-8PM and will be held in Sargent's library. This is open to Sargent parent's of students in kindergarten-grade five. I hope to see you at this informative event.
Last week we found some car keys to a Dodge on a UMASS lanyard. If you know who these might belong to, please contact Judy Farrow in the school office.
Have a wonderful week!

Good Morning
Hat Day was a huge success! Our school raised close to $1,000.00 for Haiti. The students were very proud to make their donations. Thank you very much for your support. This week we will have an assembly to continue to teach the students about service and the importance of helping others. Marianne Langston, a Sargent parent, will be here to present her work with helping children in Haiti. The assembly will be on Wednesday afternoon and Friday afternoon. Students from PM kindergarten are welcome to attend either time with a parent.
Thursday is a staff professional development day. This is a half day of school for the students. Please remember that morning kindergarten children will stay home on Thursday and afternoon children will attend kindergarten during the morning session.
Sargent teachers will participate in various learning opportunities throughout the afternoon.
Thank you all for your cooperation during drop off and pick-up. We are doing our best at the end of the day to keep the line moving.
Have a great week!
