School Happenings

Library News:

Search the Library Catalog! I just wanted to send a reminder that you can access the school's library catalog from home. You will find a library link on the Sargent School website or you may go directly to the catalog via this link http://bit.ly/zTr7Pr. Take the opportunity to search the catalog with your student. Maybe they'll find something of interest to check out during their next visit to the library. On the Home Page you will also see some web links under Books & Reading that may be helpful for celebrating Read Across America 2012 (Theme: The Lorax).

You may also continue to donate used books for use by the library and teachers.  Bins are located in the library in front of the circulation desk.

-Ms. Stalteri, School Librarian

Reminder: North Andover Kindergarden registration. Monday March 12th at 6:30 at the North Andover Middle School.

North Andover Joint Speaker Series Seminar for Parents:

Rescheduled date March 20th. Tired of doing everything around the house while the kids play video games? Come to a free seminar to learn more about the secret to nurturing self-discipline in your child without bribery, nagging, yelling, threatening or punishment. As part of the North Andover Joint Speaker Series, author Susan Tordella will be presenting “DO I HAVE TO?” How Chores Empower Families and Teach the Priceless Gift of Self Esteem on Tuesday March 20, 2012 at 7:00PM in the High School auditorium. The event is free and open to all parents. The North Andover Joint Speaker Series is supported by each school’s parent/teacher organization, the Youth Center, Community Programs, SpEd PAC and the Building Respectful Communities Committee. The Joint Speaker Series sponsors informative speakers for parents throughout the year.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Hall Monitors needed for MCAS Testing:   Dr. Foster has asked us to find volunteers to monitor the second floor hallway outside of the bathrooms during the MCAS testing.  Shifts are only 1.5 hours in length.  If you can avoid it, please do not sign up on a day that your child is testing as you are not allowed to speak to them during testing.  To take a shift (they coincide with the dates above for March and May), please sign up here: http://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/1102345632373510044

More information will follow for people who sign up to cover a shift.  Thank you!

Committee Announcementes

Book Fair Committee

The book fair is here with an all new selection of paperbacks and hardcover gift books. First through fifth graders will be visiting the fair with their classes. Kindergarteners with money will have the opportunity to come down in small groups. Don't forget, however, that the fair is open to you Monday through Thursday 9:00-2:30 extended hours on Wednesday 4:30-7:00. The last day of the book fair is Friday when our hours will be 9:00-12:00. With so many titles, you're sure to find a book appropriate for your child's reading level and interests. Great time to stock up for summer reading! Your purchases not only raise money for the school, but also lead to Scholastic Dollars; which enable us to buy more books for the library and classroom collections! Hope to see you at the fair.

Fifth Grade Committee

5th Graders plan Suitcases4Kids drive!   SAVE THE DATE of Saturday April 28th and start collecting your extra suitcases, duffle bags, and backpacks for a Suitcases4Kids drive. The 5th grade will be manning the event at the Sargent School from 10 AM – 2 PM on April 28th. More details coming!

BoxTops Challenge

Challenge deadline March 30th! Our latest submission to Box Tops is in! Will we beat our school record? The February challenge is being extended! Any entries received after the original deadline will still count toward our next Golden Scissors Award! New deadline is March 30th! Five random winners will be drawn for a goodie bag if we collect $500 in Box Tops for the month of March!

Terracycle - Wrappers

Remember to save the candy bags from your Spring candy purchases and movie outings! Our school receives about 2 cents per bag and we keep all that plastic out of the incinerators. Sargent also collects chip bags, cookie bags, yogurt cups, energy bar wrappers, plastic cups and juice pouches. This year the Sargent Green Team is cashing in $600 of our credits to help support our school's Woodland Studies and School Beautification.
