Presidents' Message

Hello Everyone,

We hope that everybody had a wonderful April vacation. This is a busy couple of weeks at Sargent. We need your help for the upcoming events.

This Wed (4/25) is the annual Sargent Art Fair and social. The art department, headed by Marty Ruzicka, displays art by each Sargent student throughout the school. Parent volunteer, Shannon Hassell, starts in the fall working with Mr. Ruzicka to label and mount every piece of art that will be seen. Everyone loves this night of art appreciation. It is wonderful to see the students proudly showing their parents their work. For this event, the PTO provides that cold treats of ice cream and/or slush to be enjoyed in the cafeteria scooped by parents and teachers. Please come to the Open House sometime between 5:30-8pm to find your child's artwork and enjoy a sweet dessert. In an effort to go green, if you bring your own bowl, you will receive an extra scoop! It takes many volunteers to make this night run smoothly. If you are able to donate an hour of your time to help, please contact zorawarren@yahoo.com.

On Saturday (4/28), the 5th Grade class is working on the Empathy piece for RAISE by running a Suitcase drive for Suitcases for Kids. Please come by Sargent between 10:00 and 2pm to drop off any suitcase, duffel or back bag that you no longer use but a Foster child can to help transport their precious cargo.

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week at Sargent. Doreen Sidell and Laura Freedman do a wonderful job coordinating breakfast and other special touches for the teachers and staff to let them know how important they are to our children. Please consider donating a baked good for the morning breakfast for the teachers.

On Wed (May 2nd) we will have our final monthly PTO meeting at Sargent for the school year. We are excited to have Andrew Maylor, the new North Andover Town Manager on the agenda. Please come to hear what he has to say as his influence can greatly impact our schools. If you would like an item added to the agenda, please submit it by this Fri (4/27) no later than 5pm to Sargentpto.pres1@gmail.com for consideration. We will also be conducting elections for next year's Sargent PTO Board positions. If you would like to be added to the ballot for a position please email Sargentpto.pres1@gmail.com by 5pm, Tues (5/1).

Have a great week,

Chris and Melissa

Earth Day April 22nd:

The idea came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a “national teach-in on the environment” to the national media; persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair; and recruited Denis Hayes as national coordinator. Hayes built a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land.

Earth Day April 22, 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, andEndangered Species Acts. "It was a gamble," Gaylord recalled, "but it worked." Each year people celebrate around the world and demonstrate the need for a healthy, sustainable environment. Fifth Grade Committee

Empathy Team:

Time to start gathering your old suitcases, duffle bags and book bags. Our 5th grade class will be holding a drive to collect bags for Suitcases4Kids, an organization founded by our own Sargent parent Ron Nickerson. (check out www.suitcases4kids.org). “In almost every musty basement, garage, or attic, there is an old, forgotten suitcase that has long since been replaced by shiny new luggage. And all around the country, when foster children are forced to move their belongings, they throw them in trash bags, putting their prized possessions into containers for garbage”. Let’s help Suitcases4Kids help these children move with dignity. Our drive will be held on Saturday, April 28th on the Sargent Grounds.

For 5th grade parents:   please sign up for one hour shifts for the drive on Saturday, April 28th using this link:   http://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/352345633699574028

Green Team:

Sargent students to celebrate Earth Day All the students are encouraged to create a poster celebrating Earth Day (click here for flyer).  All submissions must be accompanied by an entry form.   All participants will have their drawings displayed in Calzetta Hall and receive a gift for participation.
