Presidents' Message

Hello Everyone,

Thank you to everybody who worked so hard to make this past week a big success. Kim Campion and BethAnne Iglesias did a great job running their Breakfast Buddies team. Many happy students got to have breakfast with their friends. Paula Kushnir and Kathleen Willis headed up another successful Book Fair. Laura Freedman introduced Be Bold Be Bald to Sargent, a campaign that helps promote empathy towards those undergoing cancer treatment in a respectful way. The week ended with a great job done by Kelley Papa and her Monster Mash crew for putting together such a great social night for all Sargent families.

This Monday and Tuesday are half days for Parent Teacher Conferences, a great opportunity to gain insight into your child's academic career. There is just over a week left for the children to get sponsors for the FUN RUN to RUN SARGENT. We are hoping to make this our biggest and most successful fundraiser of the year, so that we won't have to undertake any other large fundraising programs this year besides Direct Donation.

Our Box Tops are low this year, please keep clipping and sending them in. This is free money for the school and brings in thousands of dollars for us.

Have a great week,

Chris and Melissa

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

The 17th Annual WINTER CARNIVAL –Friday, November 18th from 5:30 to 8:30. Volunteers needed!!! This is a great event that features games with prizes, crafts, food, pictures with Jolly the Snowman, and the ever popular holiday shopping. Additionally, our 5th grade class will be working the cafeteria to provide dinner. A flyer will be sent home soon for volunteer sign ups. Enthusiastic parents and older students, (6th grade and above) will be needed to help with setting up for the event, running games, helping with crafts and cleaning up. If you would like to help with planning the event or have any questions, please contact Natalie Howard at nataliehowardslp@gmail.com or 978-685-7669. A big thank you to those of you who have already offered to assist!

HOLIDAY SHOPPING is held the same night as the Winter Carnival. For those of you not familiar with this tradition, "stores" are set up for the children to do a little holiday shopping on their own (with a volunteer to help them.) Volunteer forms will be sent out shortly. Please consider volunteering an hour for a very enjoyable "night of shopping." We had a successful event last year and need your help for another one! This is a very fun night for the children! Please call or email with any questions: Laura Freedman, 681-9889, freedmanfamily@comcast.net; or Gen Hiller, 208-1408, cghiller@aol.com.

Over 80 volunteers are needed throughout the night, so please consider adding your name to the list early so that activities can be planned accordingly - either fill out the form that came home and send it back, or complete it electronically by clicking here.

Committee Announcementes

Fundraising  The Fun Run is less than 2 weeks away!! With everyone’s help, we can make this a fun day for the whole school and the ONLY major fundraiser of the year! The Fun Run is scheduled for Thursday, November 3rd with a rain date of Thursday, November 10th. The Run is for students only but, we are asking for volunteers to help out the day of the event. If you are available on the day of the Run, especially before the event at 8:00 am to help set-up, we would love to have you! Please contact Amy Tessitore at amytessitore@yahoo.com with your availability.

Breakfast Buddies: Thank you so much to all who were involved in the success of our Breakfast Buddies Week at Sargent! We were very grateful for the assistance of the moms/dads and kids who volunteered each morning - we could not have done it without you. Special thanks to Ms. B, Mrs. Scandore and Mr. Queenan for all their help setting up each morning. Hope all the Sargent families had fun! BethAnne Iglesias and Kim Campion

Scholastic Book Fair  The book fair was a huge success with many happy students, parents and teachers browsing and buying. Many home and classroom libraries were enriched by books purchased for teachers and through classroom gift certificates. Didn't get a chance to shop or missed out on a title you wanted? ALL NEW THIS YEAR: WE HAVE SET UP AN ON-LINE EXTENSION OF THE FAIR. Profits from this extension will benefit the school in the same way. Just visit: http://www.scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs/2859259. You'll be able to shop until November 4th. We hope you'll check it out.

5th Grade Committee   Our next all-5th grade committee meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 at 9:30 in the Cafeteria. Please mark your calendars and come if you can. Our next meeting will be an evening meeting in December. Thank you! Kim (KimHearst@comcast.net), Snowy (JimSnowy@yahoo.com) and Chris (cgfarr@verizon.net)

Community Involvement:

Sargent annual coat drive begins OCT.17th.   Coats for Kids, sponsored by Anton’s Cleaners, begins October 17th and runs through January 8th. Please help out by bringing in your gently used coats of all sizes for children, adults and babies – please no rips, tears, broken zippers or permanent stains – coats you would give to a friend to wear. The coats will be cleaned and distributed in MA and NH to those in need this holiday season. This year Sargent will again participate in the SCHOOL REWARDS program which honors the top three elementary schools that collect the most coats per student enrolled. So clean out your closets and get involved in supporting this worthy cause! A large, marked bin will be located in the main entrance for you to drop off your donations beginning October 17th.   Any questions, please contact Heather Ursu (heatherursu@hotmail.com) or Lynne Khater (lkhater@comcast.net), Community Involvement.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF: This week the familiar orange cardboard box for UNICEF will be sent home in your child’s backpack. We hope that you will assemble the UNICEF box with your child and read through the materials together. This is a simple way to involve your child in a charity – one that provides food, water, medicine, and hope to needy children all over the world. This is a voluntary program sponsored by the PTO, and we hope that you will help us continue the Sargent tradition of giving to UNICEF. Please encourage your child to bring their box trick-or-treating with them, asking for small donations, or simply give some of their own change towards this charity. Please return the boxes to school by Friday, November 4th. If you have any questions please contact Carmel Calandra-Fischer at cmcalandra@verizon.net, Community Involvement. THANKS!

Fundraising

Gift Cards (SCRIP) for Sale: Through the Sargent Gift Card Program (also known as SCRIP), Sargent families can buy gift cards at face value and a percentage of the gift card value is immediately rebated back to the school. Rebate percentages vary by merchant and run from 2%-16% of the card value and there are no fees – a $10 card is a $10 card to the buyer. Don’t just think “gift” – think “shopping” too! You can use cards to do your weekly shopping at Stop & Shop or Target. Planning a large home project? Order Home Depot cards ahead of time and use those to buy your supplies.

We have 15 different vendor cards (Dunkin’ Donuts, S&S, Panera, etc.) in stock. Print the order form and send in via your child’s backpack to the “PTO SCRIP Coordinator” with your payment or charge to your PTO account. Orders are filled on Monday of each week. Looking for another vendor? Visit the Shop With Scrip website to choose from thousands of vendors. Orders are filled around the middle of the month. You will need to create an account using the Sargent enrollment code 6F3817A319755 to order. Print the online order form and send in via your child’s backpack to the “PTO SCRIP Coordinator” along with your payment or charge to your PTO account. Visit our PTO site the learn more about Sargent's Gift Card Program.
