Presidents' Message

Hello Everybody,

It was such a trying week for many families.  We hope everyone is back in their homes with heat and electricity. Thank you to the many volunteers that helped make the rescheduled classroom Halloween parties possible.

This Tuesday, Nov 8th is a meeting for 5th grade parents with the NAMS prinicpal, Joan McQuade.  She will talk in the Sargent Cafeteria from 6-7pm to parents only about the transition to the Middle School.

Our Fun Run to Run Sargent, is scheduled for this Wednesday due to forcasted rain on Thursday.   This is a most important fundraiser of the year, so we appreciate the patience of those who have volunteered.  We definitely need your help.  Since it was rescheduled from last week, we hope the children are able to get additional sponsors with the extra time.  If this campaign is successful we will have NO more major fundraising!

Have a great week,
Melissa and Chris

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

The 17th Annual WINTER CARNIVAL  The 17th Annual WINTER CARNIVAL Friday, November 18th from 5:30 to 8:30. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!! Winter Carnival and Holiday Shopping volunteer request forms were sent home in the backpacks last week. Over 80 volunteers are needed throughout the event, so please consider adding your name to the list early so that activities can be planned accordingly - either fill out the form that came home and send it back, or complete it electronically by clicking the link below. If you are not able to commit to an entire shift, but would be willing to help, please note it when you complete your information. At this time, we are very low with volunteers. If we do not have enough volunteers for all activities, we will need to consider reducing the number of activities. Please sign up to volunteer now!.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!! Volunteer forms went home in backpacks last week. (Check the bottom of the Winter Carnival volunteer form) Holiday Shopping is held the same night as the Winter Carnival. "Stores" are set up for the children to do a little holiday shopping on their own (with a volunteer to help them.) Please consider volunteering an hour for a very enjoyable "Night of shopping." There are three shifts, 5:15-6:30, 6:30-7:30 and 7:30-8:30. We had a successful event last year, and need your help for another one! This is a very fun night for the children! Please call or email with any questions: Laura Freedman, 681-9889, freedmanfamily@comcast.net or Gen Hiller, 208-1408, cghiller@aol.com. If we do not get enough volunteers, we will only be able to set up one store this year instead of two, causing longer waiting time for the children.

Over 80 volunteers are needed throughout the night, so please consider adding your name to the list early so that activities can be planned accordingly - either fill out the form that came home and send it back, or complete it electronically by clicking here.

Committee Announcementes

Lost & Found  Please check to see if you are missing any items! All will be removed to be given to Charity at the end of the day Thursday Nov. 10th. An effort is made to return items that are clearly labeled with last names, but the PTO is not responsible for lost items! Usually only the oldest unclaimed items are donated first, but due to the overwhelmingly large number of items, this has been too difficult to maintain. All items left at the end of the day Nov. 10 will be removed. If you have any questions contact Cindy Custer: thecusters@comcast.net

5th Grade Committee   The 5th Grade class will be hosting a Hot Dog/Pizza Dinner in the cafeteria during the Holiday Social, from 5:30 - 8:30PM. Please be sure and stop by for a pizza or hot dog meal deal including chips, drink and dessert for only $4.00. All proceeds will go to support 5th grade activities!

Community Involvement:

Candy for troops: Attention All Parents of Trick-Or-Treaters! Are you looking for any destination for your child's Halloween bounty BESIDES his or her teeth and belly?! Our Candy for the Troops drive is this week! Let your child dispense their least favorite treats into a bag destined for school. Dr. Anne Todd, DMD, MMSc of North Andover will be collecting extra candy from the North Andover schools November 7th - 10th and sending the stash to the Troops! THANK YOU! Any questions, please email Heather Ursu - Community Involvement..... heatherursu@hotmail.com

People's Pantry Food Drive: Kyle Wood, our physical education teacher, in conjunction with the North Andover Youth Center is sponsoring a food drive during November. Encompassing the values of RAISE, Mr. Wood is visiting each grade and reading “Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen.” Additionally he has arranged for a member of the People’s Pantry to speak to the children of each grade about the food pantry.  Brownie Troop 62102 has created signs detailing food assignments for each grade.  Please see below for the items that we are hoping each grade can bring in:

                        Kindergarten – Canned cranberry sauce

1st Grade – boxed stuffing mix

                        2nd grade – canned gravy

3rd grade - canned vegetables (corn, carrots, green beans)

                        4th grade - instant potatoes/canned potatoes

5th grade – biscuit or cornbread mixes

Only non-perishables please.  The food drive will end on the night of the Winter Carnival, November 18th. Food will be picked up on Monday, November 21st and will be delivered to the People’s Pantry to be distributed before Thanksgiving. Mr. Wood has set a goal for the community and hopes to collect 1,500 food items! Thank you!!!

Coats for Kids: Sargent annual coat drive begins OCT.17th.   Coats for Kids, sponsored by Anton’s Cleaners, begins October 17th and runs through January 8th. Please help out by bringing in your gently used coats of all sizes for children, adults and babies – please no rips, tears, broken zippers or permanent stains – coats you would give to a friend to wear. The coats will be cleaned and distributed in MA and NH to those in need this holiday season. This year Sargent will again participate in the SCHOOL REWARDS program which honors the top three elementary schools that collect the most coats per student enrolled. So clean out your closets and get involved in supporting this worthy cause! A large, marked bin will be located in the main entrance for you to drop off your donations beginning October 17th.   Any questions, please contact Heather Ursu (heatherursu@hotmail.com) or Lynne Khater (lkhater@comcast.net), Community Involvement.

UNICEF: Trick or Treat for UNICEF:  Please return the boxes to school by this Friday, November 11th. If you have any questions please contact Carmel Calandra-Fischer at cmcalandra@verizon.net, Community Involvement. THANKS!
