Principal's Post - Week of April 13th

posted Apr 10, 2020, 9:51 AM by Jorge Goncalves

Good afternoon NAMS Families,

First and foremost, I hope that this message finds you and your loved ones well. Remember when we used to fly on airplanes and the flight attendant would remind us to put on our oxygen mask before helping others? I believe that the same goes for parenting; you have to take care of yourself so that you can provide your child with the patience and nurturing they need to thrive. The unknowns of what’s coming next in this current coronavirus pandemic can worry even the calmest of parents. We are all in uncharted territory and self-care may not seem like a priority; however, I would advocate that you make a plan as a family to insure that everyone’s needs are being met.

Two of our amazing NAMS staff members (Andrea Liacos & Christina Cyr) asked NAMS staff members to record some videos that they then compiled into a message to all of our students, which you may find here

As we conclude our first official week of Remote Learning, I hope that your child was able to actively engage in learning this week. In case you missed it, you may find the NAMS Remote Learning Plan here, along with a suggested schedule for your child(ren). Assignments will be posted on our teachers’ Google Classroom pages and we ask that all of our students work to complete all assignments. Teachers are here to help, you just need to ask. The district has created a Remote Learning website that identifies resources for all of the schools; you may find the NAMS Remote Learning Plan page here.

You may also find the NAMS Remote Learning Plan FAQs here, which I hope answers any questions you still have about the plan.

Week of April 20th

As you may have already heard/read, the North Andover School  Committee voted last night 5-0 to cancel the 4 Days of April Vacation (Tuesday, April 21st - Friday, April 24th). Monday, April 20th is Patriots' Day which is a statewide legal holiday. As of right now, we would follow our Remote Learning Plan schedule for that week with Monday being a holiday, classes/assignments for students Tuesday-Thursday, and Friday would be our staff collaboration day. We anticipate being able to confirm the schedule for the week of April 20th by the middle of next week.

The community has rallied to provide support for our families and to offer suggestions and guidance in supporting our children. There are many resources on our district’s Social/Emotional Learning website that you may find helpful in navigating this situation here and at the following address: http://www.northandoverpublicschools.com/departments/student-services/social-emotional-learning

As we continue to establish routines, I would like to resume sharing a weekly Principal’s Post with you every Friday. I have provided some updated, information, and resources below and will continue to update you with more information as it becomes available.

Be well,

Jorge Goncalves

Principal

Student Artwork

  • Earlier this year our NAMS students in the MiddleStop program created artwork for a collaborative youth art exhibition with Ms. Tomkins. The art exhibition was planned to be held at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site in Salem,MA from April 15, 2020-June 15, 2020. Because of health concerns with COVID-19 the physical show may not take place this year. You may find the virtual show here.

  • Normally, you can see student artwork all over the school thanks to Ms. Brown and Ms. Tomkins displaying student work. Ms. Brown has created a virtual gallery of some of her recently received artwork here.

And finally, NAMS misses you and can’t wait until we are all together again!
