June 2017

Hello Sargent Parents,

I hope all is well. I can’t believe it is June. Where has the time gone this year. This past MAY was chock full of excitement at the Sargent. We kicked off the month with Staff Appreciation Week where parents and the PTO went out of their way to make the educators of Sargent feel appreciated. We got a full breakfast or lunch every day culminating with chocolate dessert delight on the Friday! Our hearts felt appreciated, however our waistlines not so much:) Thank you Sargent PTO and parents. Grade 3, 4 and 5 finished up their MCASing. ELA and math tests were taken using computers this year for the first time. Kids and adult proctors did an outstanding job all the way around. Great work. We got a quick peek at our next year’s Kindergartners (our last class of K beginning at the Sargent) during Kindergarten Screening. They are so little and excited! Their excitement for school is contagious. Additionally, we’ve already had several grade level Academic Nights/Get Togethers, grade level field trips, NASEC Assemblies with more to come in June. As they do annually, the NA Fire Department came out to Sargent to work with K, 1st and 2nd graders on Fire Safety. Also, the annual NAPS Special Olympics took place at the NAHS track. This is always a wonderful event at the NAHS. We had several students athletes participating from the Sargent. They did the Sargent School proud!

Finally, May’s RAISE assembly initially was focused on how to use our new “Buddy Bench” which will be located on the playground shortly! It ended up being much more. During our RAISE Assembly, we welcomed Mrs. Kate Middlemiss as our featured speaker. Kate is a former Kindergarten teacher. She and her husband founded the Joseph Middlemiss Big Heart Foundation, in honor of their son, Joseph, who passed away at age six from cardiomyopathy.  The Foundation's objectives is to promote “Random Acts of Kindness” on local, national and international fronts, and to educate children on the power of kindness by supporting the efforts of schools. The foundation contributions aid research and spread awareness of childhood heart conditions while providing financial, social and emotional assistance to families impacted by these.

The Buddy Bench is a very generous donation sponsored by the Roberts family in memory of their son, Nicholas.  During the assembly, Mrs. Roberts and her daughter, Leyla, who is a Sargent 1st grader, were asked to join our celebration by sitting on the newly christened Buddy Bench during our assembly in the gym. The Buddy Bench has small heart on it with Nicholas and Leyla’s name engraved on it. The Buddy Bench will soon have a permanent home outside on the grounds of Sargent School!

It was an inspiring assembly! Mrs. Middlemiss was wonderful in  explaining the ripple effects of kindness in large and small ways and how our individual choices can affect others in positive ways both big and small. The Buddy Bench, and what it represents was enthusiastically received by students and staff alike. It is a wonderfully welcomed addition to our Sargent community and helps accent our RAISE values. A sincere thanks goes out to the Joseph Middlemiss Big Heart Foundation and the Roberts family!

In JUNE, we keep up the pace.  We had our second successful ALICE drill. Nice job student and staff alike as we increase our preparedness. We kick off the month with Breakfast Buddies. Always a great time when parents can come and enjoy breakfast with their child. Please see below for specific dates/times. Parents need to preregister for the event on the PTO website. Our annual Field Day was rescheduled to Friday 6/9. This is always a fun time for the kids. There are several classroom and grade End-of-Year Parties/Presentations plans. See below for some of the dates, but more importantly keep an ear out for word from your child’s teacher for specific dates and times. There is an Early Release on Wednesday 6/7. Dismissal will be at 1:45 PM. Our Our annual Flag Day Celebration is on the morning of 6/14 right after morning recess. This is a student and staff only event. Grade 5 students will be “moving onward and upward” to middle school (sniff, sniff). Will will miss them. They have several grade 5 year end events planned in June including Move up Day, Brooks Day, Pizza Lunch, Gr. 5 Academic Night, etc., etc. An exciting time for the grade 5 kids. Finally, we will have our End-of-Year RAISE Assembly (student’s and staff only) the last week of school. And the last day of school is Friday, June 23rd which is a half day. Student dismissal is at 11:50 AM. What a great time of year to be at the Sargent School!

Below are a few other important points of note:

  • EARLY RELEASE. There is ONE early releases this month: Wednesday 6/7.  Student dismissal on these Wednesdays is 1:45 PM.

  • School Spirit Day Remaining: The Sargent Student Council has scheduled  one school spirit days for the remainder of the year. On 6/16 is “Crazy Outfit Day” where students can dress up in crazy/unusual/different outfits for the day. Again, school appropriateness is a virtue, but I think some of our kids (and adults) can come up with some pretty crazy outfits to wear to school that day!

  • LAST DAY OF SCHOOL: The last day of school is Friday 6/23. It is HALF DAY. Student dismissal is at 11:50 AM.

Please remember that Sargent teachers and I are here to ensure that the Sargent children receive a quality education academically, socially and emotionally. To that end, no problem that comes up that is getting in the way of this education is too big or too small for us to know. If you have a question or concern, please contact us. Social media is a wonderful tool, but it does not take the place of a strong and open connection/relationship with your son or daughter’s teacher, counselor, principal and school. Contact directly your child's teacher, the counselor or myself with any and all school-related problems, concerns or questions about your child. The “Communication ‘Go To’ Information Chart” on the Sargent Website is another resource that can assist you with specific contact information. We look forward to hearing from you and working with you to ensure your son or daughter has a successful experience at the Sargent School. Again, no problem is too big or small.

Sincerely,

Ed Foster

Annie L. Sargent Elementary School Principal
