Elementary School Resource Officer / ALICE Information

Last year, Officer Kara Caffrey began as the NAPS Elementary Schools’ Resource Officer. Officer Caffrey works as yet another resource in the NAPS’s elementary schools helping to educate and support North Andover kids and families. You will often see Officer Caffrey visiting the Sargent and at Sargent after school functions getting to know the kids in a positive way. Make sure you give her a big hello when you see her!

I know you have heard that the Sargent School as well as the entire NAPS district is adopting ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) this year to enhance lockdown safety procedures. To date, all NAPS staff members have been trained and ALL NAPS schools have had their ALICE parent information nights. In addition, ALL NAPS students (Including Sargent's) have had grade appropriate ALICE presentations put on by Officer Caffrey and Freddy.

We had our first a scheduled ALICE drill at the Sargent in the afternoon on 3/9. Both NAPS police and fire participated. (All NAPS schools had similar ALICE drills.) This first drill is “purposely announced” to all in the school community (kids, staff, parents) so we could best begin to get used to the new way of doing things. The drill can be considered an "enhanced lockdown" and we used language related to the scenario that there is an intruder in the building. There was some barricading of doors/rooms, but no evacuation scheduled. It went very well for the first time doing it.

The Sargent School engaged in our second planned lockdown DRILL on 6/1 utilizing many of our new ALICE procedures including using the language related to the scenario that there is an intruder in the building, locking of doors/rooms and some barricading of doors/rooms. Some classes also evacuated the building. NAPD were on hand and participated as well.

Similar to fire drills, these ALICE drills will be occurring periodically throughout the school years in the future in all North Andover schools so we can best prepare ourselves in ensuring the safety of North Andover students during a potential crisis. Sargent students and staff as well as NAPD did a wonderful job during the drill. We will use this experience to continue to enhance our potential crisis response. Please contact me if you have any questions.
