Principal Lahey's Monthly Update For October

Dear Sargent Families,

I would like to begin my monthly update for October by thanking you for the warm encouragement and support I have felt as the new Principal of Sargent School. We have enjoyed a wonderful school opening in transitioning over 560 students back to school. It has been a whirlwind of fun activity in establishing new routines, seeing familiar faces and making new friends.

September brought great kudos from the North Andover Fire and Police Departments as our students and staff worked hard to keep safety at the center of all we do during our first fire drill and ALICE drill of the year. It is energizing to see our K kids adjust and shine as our newest members of our Sargent family. I know you would feel warm and proud to have watched how our 5th graders stepped up as leaders to escort the K kids during dismissal with the K teachers. These peer leaders took great pride in their role. It was uplifting to watch K kids listen and follow them with awe for how great the “big kids” were as helpers. Wonderful modeling, especially during the first month of school; a “win-win” for all involved.

We began a new Sargent tradition on the first day of school with our K-kids. Each morning we come together as a community outside to do the Pledge of Allegiance. Our Flag holders are the students who are celebrating a “birthday” that day. For students with a birthday on Saturday they hold the Flag on the Friday. Students with a Sunday birthday will be Monday Flag holders. On rainy days, the students hold the flag in their classrooms and we do the Pledge of Allegiance over the PA. It has become a wonderful way to come together as a school family as we begin our day. Mr. Shelkowitz, our music teacher, has written a special Sargent Birthday song that will debut next week!

I have also ventured into the world of Twitter. If you follow Twitter, our account is called “Sargent Sharks.” It is a wonderful way to offer a glimpse into the daily life of Sargent School. I hope you will become a follower and allow it to bring a smile to your day to see the joy and marvelous learning happening each day at Sargent.

Our Sargent family is blessed with the huge hearts of our PTO and its many, many volunteers. I continue to be amazed by your generosity and kindness. You warmly welcomed our teachers back with thoughtful gifts of food and classroom support. I hesitate to list the hundreds of ways we are supported by you. We are grateful to the many, many volunteers that add positive energy to help fuel our school daily. I join each teacher and staff member in thanking you for the gift of your time and talents. Our students benefit greatly by your kindness, and the connection we share with you in making Sargent school a family that supports each other; it is impactful, great modeling for our children to see. As I have said often, when families and school partner together ~ our students will soar! Thank you!

Looking ahead to October we are up for great learning with a big dose of fun thrown in to create a joyful learning environment. Here are a few items to note as we begin October:
  • North Andover School Enrichment Council Tuesday, 10/3/17
“Poetry In Motion” K-2, and Gr. 3- 5  (2 performances)

  • Picture Day Thursday, 10/5/17
Always a big event for our students!

  • Welcome Back Family Picnic Thursday, 10/5/17 5:00-6:30 pm
    DONATE FLASHLIGHTS AND BATTERIES!
This is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community to share time together. This year the PTO is spearheading a FLASHLIGHT & BATTERY drive for the victims of the Hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico. Please consider donating FLASHLIGHTS AND BATTERIES during our Welcome Picnic or send to school with your children this week. Thank you!

  • Sargent School Annual FUN RUN!  Friday, 10/13/17 (Rain Date: 10/20/17)
For those of you that are new to this energizing event, it is a big day for the Sargent Sharks! The PE staff along with our PTO volunteers will have our playground field looking like a mini-marathon backdrop. The kids are always fired-up for this day. Aptly named, the number one goal is to have Fun! It is our largest fundraiser and I believe among our best day of the year to see first hand what our “Sargent Family” looks like. Thank you for your generosity in sponsoring your children.

  • Knights On The Run Saturday, 10/14/17 Check in at 8am Kids run at 9am
    Please see the link: www.knightsrun5k.com
We want to keep the running going, from our Fun Run to Knights On The Run! Atkinson school has won the Trophy 4 times, and last year Thomson School won it. Something tells me the SHARKS OF SARGENT SCHOOL ARE READY TO RULE!! It is sure to be a fun morning for one and all and a fabulous fundraiser.

  • Halloween Spirit Day Tuesday, October 31st
Students will be allowed to wear their costumes to school with a few restrictions. This is optional (please do not feel like your child has to wear a costume) this mirrors our “Spirit Day Celebrations” that happen throughout the year on different days. The kids love to dress up on Pajama Day or Patriots Day so we would like to start a new tradition and have Halloween become a Spirit Day as well. The few restrictions are as follows:
    • Costumes must be school appropriate (all ages considered)
    • No masks or face paint can be worn.
    • No accessories that may be “accidentally” used inappropriately or lost. (Halloween night is a big night and you want to be sure you have all the pieces in place for Trick or Treating.)
    • Things like Harry Potter glasses, or Mickey Mouse Ears are fine. The main thing is no facemasks and no face paint.
    • I reserve for all teachers the right to make decisions around what is and is not appropriate for teaching and learning, including the request for removal of items like capes, glasses, etc.
    • I will send out a follow up reminder just prior to Halloween. Thank you.
