Read all about Sargent's new Computer Lab!

Dear Sargent Community,

The Sargent Sharks continue to be blessed by the generous spirit of both our PTO and our parents, and this is most recently evidenced in the opening of our new Computer Lab! The PTO’s gift of twenty-five Chromebooks to Sargent School (with charging stations!) is simply amazing!

These next few weeks in the lab will focus on additional ST Math (all students will continue in their classrooms with the current ST Math sessions with their teachers) and after February break, students will work on reading and writing on the Chromebooks during computer lab time.

This lab time gives us the opportunity to have our students access valued technologies that support their learning with a targeted focus in mathematics, reading, and writing. A special thank you to Kris Murray for organizing our parent volunteers, and to our volunteers who are supporting our students in the computer lab for 30-minute sessions, which kicked off this past week.

The scheduled reading/writing sessions will provide teachers with the valuable time to work with small groups of students in expanding their reading skills. Our goal through these weekly 30 minute interventions is data-driven. Teachers will leave their students in the computer lab with parent volunteers. They will then take small groups of students with similar areas of growth in reading to work on a particular skill.

Our teachers’ hard work in collecting data on each and every one of their students now allows them to work with a laser focus on the specific reading needs of every learner. This response to intervention gives students valuable one on one time with their teacher for a 4-6 week period; they will then rejoin their class in the computer lab once the intervention is complete.

This past week provided a window into the expected success of this initiative. It was wonderful to see our students in the lab and in small groups with their teachers, having fun and being fully engaged in their learning! In addition to scheduled lab time with volunteers, teachers are signing up to take their own classes in the computer lab! This will allow our teachers to work on an array of topics related to current teaching happening in classrooms, which will now be complemented with computer lab work around the subject.

Thank you to all of our parents, and to the Sargent PTO, for making this possible!!

Please see these photos from the new lab! Go Sharks!

Sincerely,
