ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM
PROGRAM MENU
2009 – 2010

Chess Club (K-5)
Offered for beginners as well as skilled players. The club will meet every Tuesday morning in the cafeteria, 7:40 to 8:25, beginning in October.

Sunshine Math Superstars (K-5)
This program continues to be a big hit with both students and parents! It’s a voluntary, self-corrected, take-home math sheet program. Sheets are distributed to participating children, once a week, for 25 weeks (10 weeks for kindergarten program). Completed and corrected sheets are returned for recognition in our weekly newsletter, The Paw Prints, to celebrate the students’ academic achievement. Sunshine Math will also be available to access online on our Thomson website. We will send out information on this to all that sign up for Sunshine Math.

Building Structures
A course designed for the child who loves to build with imagination. In the past this has involved constructing challenge structures with Kapla Blocks or Magz, making a ping pong waterfall using TP rolls and a school wall, building individual marble mazes, and crafting musical instruments from set odds and ends from home. It has been run as both a 4-week and an 8-week program. We will meet on Thursday mornings in the cafeteria, 7:40 to 8:25, beginning in October.

Student Newspaper/The Thomson Tiger Prints (4th and 5th)
4th and 5th grade students are invited to apply to be Editors. Their job will be to solicit contributions from the entire student body, edit, assemble, and then print each issue. Although only a limited number of 4th and 5th graders can be editors, we’ll need students from all grades to submit stories, pictures, jokes, and photographic images. Additional parent volunteers may be needed – it’s a wonderful opportunity to make a difference and have some fun with the kids!
If you’re interested, please include your name below. Editors will begin meeting in October after school, in the Thomson library, on dates to be determined.

If you’d like to volunteer, or if you have any questions regarding the program, please do not hesitate to contact Doreen Albrecht at (978) 689-0931 or doreenla@comcast.net
