Thomson Tigers at UMASS-Lowell Basketball (Saturday 2/13)
Last week’s guest speaker, UMASS-Lowell Head Coach Greg Herenda, has graciously invited all Thomson students and parents to attend UMASS-Lowell’s game vs. Merrimack College on Saturday, February 13 at 4pm in Lowell, MA. All students must be accompanied by an adult and check in will be with Mr. Gilligan between 3:30 and 4:00 in the lobby of Costello Gym. Admission is free for all Thomson families. The directions to the game are listed below:
 
Costello Athletic Complex – Home of the UMASS-Lowell River Hawks
From the North: Coming South on I-93, take exit 46 for Routes 110/113. Follow Route 110W/VFW Parkway into Lowell. Go to the fourth traffic light and turn right (University Ave.). Take a right at the next set of lights onto Riverside St. Go past two buildings on the right and Costello Athletic Center is located adjacent to the large parking lot; Cushing Field Complex is located behind the large parking lot.
 
Route 3 or I-495: Take exit for Lowell Connector to exit 5B (Thorndike Street). Proceed to the seventh set of lights. Bear to the left at Cobblestones Restaurant onto Arcand Drive. At the next set of lights, turn left onto Father Morrisette Blvd. Continue straight to the third set of lights (after the bend in the road) and take a right. Cross the Merrimack River to the next set of lights. The University is in front of you. Proceed to the next set of lights and take a right onto Riverside Street. Go past two buildings on the right and Costello Athletic Center is located adjacent to the large parking lot; Cushing Field Complex is located behind the large parking lot.
 
Brooks School Skating (Sunday 2/21)
All Thomson students and parents are welcome to join Mr. Gilligan and staff as guests of North Andover Youth Services at Brooks School Ice Rink for Public Skating on Sunday February 21st from 6:40 pm -8:40 pm. Admission is $3.00 per person, and you need to bring skates as they do not have rentals.
 
Appleseed Literary Magazine Spring Submissions due on March 1st
The regional literary magazine Appleseed is accepting writing and art submissions for consideration to be published in their spring publication. Please submit your work to Appleseed advisor Ms. Gilmartin by March 1st.
 
Student Council Valentine Sales
All student council proceeds from the sale of Valentine flowers and lollipops will be sent to a relief fund to help the people of Haiti.

North Andover Middle School (NAMS) Principal Joan McQuade would like to invite all of the North Andover 5th grade parents to sign up for the NAMS NEWS in an effort to begin the transition process. Also, please check the NAMS website often for updated news, team and school wide happenings.

Father/Daughter Dances
Thank you to all who volunteered at, baked for, and attended the Father/Daughter Dances.  We hope all of the girls and their dads enjoyed there time at the dances.  We really appreciate all of the help from the Thomson community.  What a great way to spend your evening and raise money for the school. 
 
Youth Center Auction
4th and 5th Grade parents, please send in your donations of $3, $5, or $10 for the Youth Center Basket. Checks should be made payable to Thomson School PTO.  All monies collected will go towards a lottery basket for the Youth Center Auction (see below.) NAPAC NEWS
On Tuesday, February 9th, NAPAC (The North Andover Parent Advisory Council for Children with Special Needs)will present: "PREPARING FOR TRANSITION to Middle School, High School and Beyond”. We will welcome Special Education Director Joyce Laundre along with several representatives from the Middle and High School who will explain what programs/classrooms/resources are available at these schools, and what parents should prepare ahead for as our kids approach a building/school transition.
 
We will also welcome Special Needs attorney Elaine Cockroft who will explain the ins and outs of the post-age of 18 issues such as guardianship, transitioning to various agencies, special needs trusts, etc.  We will present a parent’s perspective on these complicated post-18 issues, followed by an informal Q&A between parents to share our experiences.  
 
Our meeting will be held in the North Andover High School Library from 7-9pm.   We hope you will join us for a very informative evening.
 
Around Town
Little League Registration
Little League registration is ongoing for all ages from 5 – 18. Please visit www.nayouthbaseball.org if you haven’t registered your children.  Evaluations for all 10, 11 and 12 year olds will be held on Saturday, February 27th. Evaluations for 8 & 9 year olds who did not participate in the fall will be held on Sunday, February 28th.  The make up date for all 10, 11 and 12 year olds will be Saturday, March 6th.  Evaluations will be held at DB’ Instructional Baseball, 1600 Osgood St.  Please visit www.nayouthbaseball.org for more detailed information about registration and evaluations.  Please make every effort to have all children registered before February 27th.
 
Chess Jamboree
There will be a CHESS JAMBOREE for grades 1-5 on Saturday, March 13 at the North Andover Middle School.  1st and 2nd grades play 1-3 p.m.  3rd grade plays noon – 3 p.m.  4th and 5th grades play 9 a.m. – noon.  Cost is $5 for grades 1 and 2, and $10 for grades 3, 4, and 5.  Proceeds if any to benefit NASEC (North Andover Schools Enrichment Council).  Space is limited and pre-registration is required.  Please email Jeremy Dalmer at jeremydalmer@comcast.net, or call 617-417-1901.
