Social Emotional Learning Skills

School-specific aggregate data that was collected during our first SEL survey is allowing the Director of SEL and the SEL Leadership Team to develop and implement tiered interventions, professional development, curriculum and programming to meet the individual needs of the students and staff in each school in North Andover. We are focusing specifically on four SEL skills. You can read more and download resources below. Growth Mindset

Growth mindset is the belief that you can grow your talents and abilities with effort. Students with a growth mindset see effort as necessary for success, embrace challenges, learn from criticism, and persist in the face of setbacks. They might ask the teacher to demonstrate a different way to solve a problem, volunteer answers in class even when unsure, or seek out challenging problems. Click here for support strategies, activities, and resources.

Self-Management

Self-Management is the ability to effectively manage your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations. This includes managing stress, delaying gratification, motivating yourself, and setting and working toward personal and academic goals. Students with strong self-management skills arrive to class prepared, pay attention, follow directions, allow others to speak without interruption, and work independently with focus. Click here for support strategies, activities, and resources.

Self-Efficacy

Self-Efficacy is the belief in one’s ability to succeed in achieving a specific outcome or reaching a specific goal. Students with high levels of self-efficacy participate more in class, work harder, persist longer, and have fewer adverse emotional reactions when encountering difficulties than students with lower self-efficacy. Click here for support strategies, activities, and resources.

Social Awareness

Social Awareness is the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures, to understand social and ethical norms for behavior, and to recognize family, school, and community resources and supports. Students with strong social awareness can more easily adapt to their environment, empathize with the perspectives of others, engage in fewer disruptive classroom behaviors, and are able to engage in constructive communication with their peers and resolve conflicts when they arise. Click here for support strategies, activities, and resources.
